When I join a challenge I plan to finish it. Last week I mentioned that my dad had a stubborn streak and I think that plays a part for me. I have 5 books left over from a 2010 challenge, plus a few other challenges to finish this year and I’m determined to do it. I need your help with two challenges.
I signed up to read, review and give away 12 books this year and I’m offering up the 3 books I have left to finish the challenge. Skinny Legs & All by Tom Robbins (trade paperback), Emma by Jane Austen (trade paperback), Emerald Dreams by Carolyn Bourne (hardcover)and they have all been read one time by me.
I also need your help to finish the States challenge. This is the 3rd year I’ve tried this one and I’d like to check it off this year.
Please recommend a book from the blank states for me and the shorter the better 🙂 Here’s the challenge page for the 21 states I have left.
Giveaway
Tell me which book or books you’d like to win. I’ll give you an extra entry for every book you recommend in the States challenge above.
I’ll choose winners on October 19th.
Birthday Photo
I grew up surrounded by family and we spent a lot of time together. My cousin Amy and I put on lots of “shows” that I’m sure everyone just loved 😉 That’s me on the left and my cousin Sarah between us. Amy was actually a good dancer. I took two years of something called acro and remained terrible.
Amy and I did not go to the same school but we were roommates at Ohio State and maid/matron of honor at each other’s weddings
Maybe I was in 5th grade or so here? I really don’t know.
Win a B&N gift card here.
Win a journal and chocolate here.

Love the trip down memory lane. Good luck with your challenges 🙂
Well, I am still a terrible dancer! Although I do dance with my girls(students)!! They don’t mind at all!
As I am in India, I can’t help you with the reading here! But best of luck!
For West Virginia, I’d recommend Rocket Boys – I’m not sure how long it is, but it’s a fast, wonderful read!
I love the picture of you and your cousins and I imagine your shows were wonderful. How cool that y’all got to be roomies in college!
For Utah, I would recommend The Actor and The Housewife by Shannon Hale. It’s light and fun, and I love Shannon Hale’s writing. Great form in that picture! :–)
For West Virginia you gotta read Skipping A Beat, it was so good. For Nebraska, you could read a Jack Reacher novel, Worth Dying For. A quick read for Iowa is The Quickening. Love the picture! Reminds me of the “shows” my daughter and her friends would put one.
I love the photo. The three of you are too cute.
#1 – I would love to have Emma since I need to read more Classics to review for Quirky Girls Read
#2 – The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is set in MA and is short – not to mention very good, if you haven’t read it already. I can come up with others if so.
#3 – I think I had that same bedazzled jazz dance outfit, except mine was dark green. It didn’t turn me into Ginger Rogers either.
Loving your costumes. This is the best birthday themed thing I’ve ever read.
As far as states, I can offer help with these:
Connecticut – Strangers at the Feast by Jennifer Vanderbes
Hawaii – Unfamiliar Fishes by Sarah Vowell (I haven’t read it though)
Montana – A River Runs Through It by Norman McLean (and it is a Brad Pitt movie!)
Nevada – 24/7: Living It Up and Doubling Down in the New Las Vegas by Andres Martinez (non-fiction but fun fast read that is one of my favorite)
Utah — The Lonely Polygamist by Brady Udall (not short though but really good).
I love the picture of you and your cousins. I’ll bet those shows were fun.
As to the states: Willa Cather’s O’Pioneers or My Antonia would be a great read for Nebraska. As mentioned last week, Tony Hillerman’s novels are set in New Mexico and sometimes cross the line into Arizona.
You look great! What a great pose…I wouldn’t mind winning Skinny legs and all. Pinkim.
For Rhode Island, how about Rogue Island by Bruse DeSilva…
How about The Beach Affair (Colleen Fitzgerald Mystery #1)
by Barbara Johnson
Oops The Beach Affair (Colleen Fitzgerald Mystery #1)
by Barbara Johnson set in Delaware…
Burned by Carol Higgins clark set in Hawaii
You were an entertainer! Found something new about you, Stacy.
What a show girl! I think O left a comment on the States page…
Let me see if I can suggest some books for your states challenge:
1. Arizona – Betty Webb’s Lena Jones series – Desert Noir is the first or Jenn McKinlay’s Sprinkle With Murder
2. Arkanasas – Charlaine Harris’ Lily Bard series (yes, not Sookie) – Shakespeare’s Landlord is 1st
3. Massachusetts – Brunonia Barry’s The Lace Reader
4. New Mexico – Tony Hillerman’s books – some of the early ones are quite short
5. Oklahoma – Donis Casey’s Alafair Tucker books are favorites of mine – The Old Buzzard Had it Coming is 1st in series
Love the pics of you!
I’d love to win Emma! I believe Barbara Kingsolver’s The Bean Trees and Animal Dreams are set in Arizona. The Given Day by Dennis Lehane is set in Massachusetts. It’s long but supposed to be really good. The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff is set in Utah. For more, check out Books Set In…
Good luck with finishing off those challenges!
