It sometimes entered Mr. Pontellier’s mind to wonder if his wife were not growing a little unbalanced mentally.  He could see plainly that she was not herself.  That is, he could not see that she was becoming herself and daily casting aside that fictitious self which we assume like a garment with which to appear before the world.

Jocelyn’s Austen wrote wonderful novels about love and courtship, but never married.  The book club was Jocelyn’s idea, and she handpicked the members.  She had more ideas in one morning than the rest of us had in a week, and more energy, too.  It was essential to reintroduce Austen into your life regularly, Jocelyn said, let her look around.  We suspected a hidden agenda, but who would put Jane Austen to an evil purpose?

Second paragraph

Sorry it’s so long.  I’m teasing myself since I plan on starting this in the next day or two.  I need to get busy on finishing the Jane Austen challenge!

The words were too small for me to read, and I hadn’t brought by reading glasses.  I squinted, trying to hide this fact from Jack, but, of course, he caught on right away.

“Any particular reason he’s doing that?” Virgil asked.

“Not as far as I know.  I think he’s tired of being here,” Sanders said.

Mr. Bintz was about forty years old, short and thin, intense, with the smugness that Yankees can’t help but exude when they venture into decaying towns of the Deep South.

How could anyone live like this? their smirks seemed to ask.

The chill that spread through Molly was different from any that she had experienced previously.  It was not a quivery thing localized along the spine or the nape of the neck, did not shiver through her like a vagrant breath of eternity, but lingered.  A coldness seemed to be spawned in the very cavities of her bones, in the red-and-yellow mush of marrow, from which it spread outward to every cell in every extremity.
