An award and fun Mommy blog

These past few weeks have been very busy and I’m not sure that’s going to change for a while.  Today is my family baby shower, so I’m on my way home (a few hours south) to celebrate with the women who have known me all my life, lots of them have known me since my Mom’s baby shower!  Anyway, I’m looking forward to the girl time before the men all come out and join us for a barbecue.  A long, good day ahead.

You all know I am a reader, but I consciously made the decision to not read pregnancy books.  I have the What to Expect book and read it as I progress through the stages, but I know so many friends who have become obsessed with books that tell them how to have the best pregnancy.  I’m all for a great pregnancy, I’ve been following the doctor’s orders (ok, ok, except for the weight part :)) and have felt pretty good.  And the best part for a worrier like me?  By not reading all of the ways that I could ruin the baby before he or she draws a breath or all the things that could go wrong I have had a relatively stress-free pregnancy so far.  I mean women have been doing this for quite a while and somehow the human race has flourished so I think my body knows what to do.

So, I haven’t really been seeking out baby reading yet, but I found Constance Marie’s blog by accident and have fallen in love.  She is an actress, most recently known as George Lopez’s wife on his sitcom.  She has a 15 month old daughter and posts candidly on her difficulties in conceiving to Mom groups to getting your body back.  The post I found most helpful was greening your nursery.  Did you know that all cribs in major department stores come from China and are sprayed with pesticide?  The baby does put that wood in his or mouth!  Anyway, the information is good and her writing style is engaging and full of personality.  If you are pregnant or have a baby I think you’ll love her perspective.  Here’s the link.

On to a non-baby related topic, I want to thank Trisha (Eclectic/Eccentric) for this cheery award.  I’m supposed to write 10 things that make me happy, and then pass the award on to ten other bloggers.  Here goes…

1. Eating for two 2. Books 3. Friends 4. Family 5. Autumn 6. Walks 7. Keeping busy 8. Ohio State football (first game Thursday) 9. My hubby and daddy-to-be 10. Blogger friends who take the time to read my posts, especially the ones I know by name because they leave comments or send sweet emails.

I’m not passing this on to 10 people, but I’ll encourage you all to check out Constance’s blog and see if you find it refreshing too.

Stacy, I hope you have a marvelous time at your shower. You will, I know. This is your day, so soak it up and enjoy!! I’m so impressed with your healthy attitude toward your pregnancy. I know you’ve had a journey getting here and I also know that not every aspect of it has been pleasant. However, you’ve done it just right, it seems to me. Hugs to you.

Thank you for the boost of confidence, Kay! I’ve had a good month or two, but now it’s all swelling and weight gain 🙂

Very true about babies putting cribs in their mouths. We made the mistake too of putting my niece’s crib next to a decorative eucalyptus wreath and came in one morning to find pieces of it all over the crib and on her face – she had tried to eat it!

Have a wonderful time at your shower – hope you get lots of great stuff! (and no eucalyptus wreathes!)

A great cautionary tale! We are headed to Amish country next weekend to find a locally made, organic stain finish crib.

I think it’s a much better idea to not stress yourself out by reading all those baby books. Many of them are contradictory anyway, and if you follow all of the advice given, I think you would only be allowed to eat organic carrots and drink water. Plus, your entire day would be spent doing baby yoga and listening to classical music. 🙂

If I read one book I’d start reading them all. I’m trying to maintain so sense of letting nature do its thing. Some days it’s easier than others!

Have fun at your shower today. I think you are right not to read all of those books. They will drive you crazy as they did for most of my friends. The What to Expect is just good info. Enjoy visiting with family and friends and congrats on the award too 🙂

Have a great time at your baby shower. I never actually had one!

I was the same I did not read any of those baby books, the only thing I did do was not eat some of the do not eat things (ok I dont eat seafood to start with so no big sacrifice). I only read baby books after bubba was born and even then it was more developmental type books ( like at 6 months you can expect this).

I will check out the blog you mentioned. I dont really read to many mummy blogs though. I probably should 🙂

I’ve made a note of a few of the baby books that you’ve suggested and plan on checking them out from the library. Once I have the baby I am sure I will need some reading material.

Have fun my friend! I hope you will have the best baby shower, like the one you organized for me! You are so sweet. I wosh I could be there to celebrate with you! Kisses. Virginie.
PS: Did you put a baby registry anywhere?

    • stacybuckeye says:

I wish you could have been here too, but you gave us a very nice gift while we were in France 🙂 I’m registered at both Babies R Us and Target, but you are not allowed to buy anything else! You already gave us a great pre-baby French vacation this year 🙂

      • virginie says:

All right I will wait for the baby to come to send you another gift. Once I know if it is a boy or a girl! We had a blast having you here. Next time we will come to the States to meet baby Putman!

You are very smart not to read all of that stuff. Each person’s pregnancy is different and could totally drive you crazy. I always say…”go with your gut instinct.” You know if somethings right or off!!

  8. bermudaonion says:

Don’t read any of those books or listen to anyone’s horror stories! I’m sure you’ve got a great doctor who will take good care of you. Congratulations on your award!

  9. Melody says:

I didn’t read a lot of pregnancy books when I was pregnant. You know, reading too much of those can be pretty confusing at times, and I agree with the others that it’s best not to stress yourself and simply go through the journey through your gynae and your instinct. 🙂

And Congrats on your award! It’s very well-deserved!

  10. Alice Teh says:

Congratulations on your award! I love the answers too. I have no idea about the feeling of being pregnant although I secretly wish one day I would have my own child.

  11. Bonnie says:

It sounds like you’re doing the right thing by not reading a lot if it is going to cause you stress! Some preparation is necessary as things are so different now in our world and environment. The blog you mentioned sounds wonderful and that is one thing that I wish I had known more about when I was a new mom, about greener safer things to have around. Please research vaccine safety and timing of vaccines, Dr. Sears is supposed to have a good book. I’d be happy to talk with you if you would like. Again, another thing that I wish that I had known more about.
