My favorite high school movies

I read Carrie this week and it got me thinking about some of my favorite high school movies.  As a teen in the 80’s that decade is well-represented.

1. The Breakfast Club (1985)  I know this one is always showing up on this blog, but I can’t help it.  Here’s the post about why I love it so much.

2. Sixteen Candles (1984)  This one actually gets better with every viewing.  That whole movie is full of teen insecurity.  Here’s the post about why I love it so much.

3. the Harry Potter movies (2001-2011)  Can you imagine attending Hogwarts?  I think the fact that we all can proves how spectacular this series is.  While I liked the books better, each movie has gotten better and now I love the movies too.  I think The Goblet of Fire (2005) was my favorite onscreen.

4. Grease (1978) I can sing every song in this musical.  I had a hard time believing that any of the cast was young enough to be in high school, but it was great fun anyway.

5. Mean Girls (2004) This is a great movie about, what else, how mean teen girls can be to each other.  This is probably the last time I actually enjoyed watching Lindsay Lohan onscreen.

6. The Karate Kid (1984) I love this story of the new kid on the block who did nothing wrong but talk to the wrong girl.  He overcame bullying by beating them at their own game.

7. Pretty in Pink (1986) Aw, Duckie.  Who didn’t love Duckie in this love story about a ‘richie’ falling for a poor girl.  Their prom certainly beats the one Carrie had!

8. Dead Poet’s Society (1989) Teaching boys raised to appreciate their priveleged status a different way to look at life is at the heart of this movie that requires at least one tissue.

9. Bring It On (2000) Do not ask me why I love this cheesy movie because I do not know.  I was not a cheerleader nor did I ever have a desire to be. It’s a mystery, but I really liked it.

10. Heathers (1989) I haven’t seen this one in forever and really need to watch it again.  I remember the bitchiness and the angst and the wit.  Loved it.

11. Election (1999) This dark comedy was a great story about an overachiever going too far and her teacher going even further.  Great stuff.

12. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) I didn’t fall in love when I saw this the first time in high school, but each viewing makes me appreciate it more.

Movies that celebrate summer

It is officially summer and that got me thinking of some of my favorite movies that celebrate the sun, the unbearable heat, and vacations.  Here are my  favorite 10 movies that celebrate summer.  What are some of yours?  Maybe I’ll have to revise my list if you remind me of better ones 🙂

1. Summer School (1987).  It’s Mark Harmon.  That should be all I need to say.

2. Movie poster shows a woman in the ocean swimming to the right. Below her is a large shark, and only its head and open mouth with teeth can be seen. Within the image is the film's title and above it in a surrounding black background is the phrase "The terrifying motion picture from the terrifying No. 1 best seller." The bottom of the image details the starring actor and lists credits and the MPAA rating.Jaws (1975).  Ruined the beach for me for a long time.

3. Dirty Dancing (1987).  Who didn’t want to spend a summer with Johnny Castle when they first saw this?

4. National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983).  Who doesn’t remember the summer road trips with family?  Let me know if any of you have a story as good as this one 🙂

5. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005). I didn’t read the book but I was charmed by the 4 friends in this movie.

6. Summertime (1955). A movie that celebrates summer vacations, Venice and Katharine Hepburn.

7. An Affair to Remember (1957). It starts on a vacation and the romantic last scene has snow falling in the background.  I still need to see the original.

8. Under the Tuscan Sun (2003). If only I had been able to convince my husband we needed to buy a fixer upper while we were on vacation in Italy!

9. Weekend at Bernie’s (1989).  Probably the only list where you will find this movie listed above Stand By Me.  For a summer cheesefest you really can’t go wrong with this one.

10. Stand By Me (1986).  Was I the only one surprised to find out that  Stephen King could write such a sweet and heartwarming coming of age story?

EDITED TO ADD- Grease (1978)  You were all so right! It was completely wrong to leave Grease off this list!  I’d probably add it in at 5 or 6.

Fave Film #25 – The Wedding Singer

1998

Cast- Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Christine Taylor

Robbie Hart is a wedding singer, a good one, but still a wedding singer and on his wedding day his bride-to-be decides that it isn’t enough for her.  Robbie is depressed but finds purpose in helping Julia plan her wedding to Glen, a less than impressive fiance.

Why I love it- It is no secret that I love all things 80’s, so this ode to the 80’s is an obvious fit for me.  I held off seeing it, however, due to its lead.  I am not a fan of Adam Sandler movies (I did love him on Saturday Night Live), so I was surprised that I totally fell for him as the wedding singer.  He had a vulnerability and normalcy in this movie that I hadn’t seen from him before.  And if you add the always charming Drew Barrymore, well you have the basis for a good flick.

It hit the over the top 80’s vibe just right, with the pop culture references, the music and wardrobe.  Just look at the poster and Adam Sandler’s permed hair!  It took me back to my high school days (a little) and life before cell phones and texting when a cd player was the hot new thing.

I never would have thought I would buy into Adam Sandler as a romantic lead, but what can I say?  His song to Julia at the end is one that I sing to my hubby 😉  And it’s funny.  It’s a sweet romantic comedy.

Fun Fact- In a recent Entertainment Weekly poll of favorite wedding movies The Wedding Singer tied for second with Wedding Crashers.  Father of the Bride was #1.

Five Words for Charity

When I read through some of the posts from the latest read-a-thon I saw that some people were giving money to charity based on the number of comments left on their posts.  I like this idea.  As with any good idea I must tinker with it and make it my own.  Here’s what I’ve come up with…

Tomorrow is the end of the month and the day I post my 5 word movie reviews and it will also give you the opportunity to add your two cents for charity.

Leave a comment with 1-5 words to describe the movie (don’t forget to tell me which one) and you will have contributed $1 to charity.  How easy is that?!  As a bonus, I’ll also contribute $1 for any 1-5 word review you leave on any of my previously reviewed movies (the list is here).  I’m going to count all the reviews you all have already contributed.  That’s $22 already in the charity fund!

So, what’s the charity?  You tell me.  Once we reach $100 the person who has contributed the most reviews will get to pick a charity and write a blog post about it (if they want).  Since I’m counting previous reviews that means Heather is in the lead with 4, but that’s not so many that you can’t catch up 🙂  She is followed by Stephanie with 3, Bermudaonion, Jo-Jo, Jenners, Hannah and Richard with 2 each, and Kay, Bumbles, Carol, Alice and Margot with 1 apiece.

It’s up to you how long this lasts.  You could all get busy and we could have a winner and a charity before the weekend is over or you could make us wait quite a while to know the lucky charity.  My two stipulations are that the charity must have a website or be able to accept online donations and that the reviews are real and not made up 🙂

Looking forward to your participation and giving money to a worthy charity.

Fave Film #26 – Dirty Dancing

1987

Cast- Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Jerry Orbach

Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman is visiting Kellerman’s resort in the Catskills with her family before she heads off to college in the fall.  Always the good girl who wants to make the world a better place she is struck by the lust bug when she sees sexy Johnny Castle doing the dirty dance.  She helps his childhood friend and by doing that is able to be close to Johnny.  As a dance instructor at the resort the older Johnny knows he shouldn’t get involved with Baby, but some things are just meant to be.

Why I love it- Where to start?  Thanks to Netflix streaming I was able to watch this for free this week and was amazed that I could have forgotten how good it was.  I always think of it as one of the core 1980’s movies of my teen years, but watching it again after so many years made me fall in love with this romance all over again.

Let’s start with Baby.  I think any teenage girl will see at least some part of themself in Baby.  She is awkward, insecure, and at 17 wants to grown up already.  She also exudes this idealism and goodness that appeals to me.  She made Johnny want to be a better person and isn’t that what we all want our significant others to think?  Jennifer Grey somehow pulls off a 17 year old to perfection, although she was 27 at the time.

Next is Johnny, who, let’s face it, is the romantic bad boy that we all secretly hoped we could snag and keep when we were teens.  We would be the only one who saw the real man inside, the good person he was (okay, maybe I’m projecting here).  Somehow this older guy who had ‘had many women’ fell under Baby’s spell and still managed to maintain his rough edges. I mean, c’mon, “Nobody puts Baby in a corner” made every girl fall in love.  I loved Patrick Swayze in this role.

So, it was a love story, but it was also about being your best self and not judging other people.  And the soundtrack is one that takes me back every time.  I always gets a little teary at the last song ‘Time of Your Life’ and this week was no different.  Don’t ask me why.  As for the dancing, it was like watching Dancing with the Stars, only less sparkly and with more heat.

The story, the acting, the music, the dancing all make this a great movie and one that I should watch more that every ten years or so.  There were so many clips to choose from, but I went with Patrick Swayze singing She’s Like the Wind with clips from the movie.  He was so talented.

Fave Movie #73 – Rain Man

1988

Cast- Dustin Hoffman, Tom Cruise, Valeria Golino

Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Hoffman), Best Original Screenplay, Best Director

Charlie Babbitt is a selfish car dealer who needs money fast.  When his estranged father dies he heads back to Ohio for the reading of the will.  Only Charlie wasn’t left with any money.  When he discovers the wealth was left to someone else he tracks them down.  What he finds is an autistic brother he never knew about.  Still miffed about the money he kidnaps him and the two begin a cross-country journey that won’t leave either one of them the same.

Why I love it- The two powerhouse performances stand out in this beautiful story of redemption.  Hoffman may have won the Oscar for his superb acting, but Cruise was also impressive.  These two made an already sharp script shine.  Hoffman is heartbreaking and heartwarming as Raymond and Cruise’s Charlie has such a transformation that it leaves you rooting for him when you hated him two hours before.  I liked watching Charlie come to understand Raymond and with that came the love of a brother he never knew he needed.

This was autism before everyone knew what autism was.  It is a look at the love and value an autistic person has, when often those things are overlooked.  You can’t help but fall in love with Raymond.  There is such a beauty and humor in this film that it makes it hard to forget.  I loved when Raymond made his first joke.  What could have been a depressing movie came to life with a sharp wit and great writing.

Fave Film #78 – The Proposal

2009

Cast- Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Betty White, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson

Margaret Tate is a powerful book editor in New York City and Andrew Paxton is her beaten down executive assistant of three years.  When Margaret is told she’ll be deported back to Canada because she didn’t take care of her visa she forces Andrew to marry her so she can stay in the country and keep her job.  They head to Sitka, Alaska to tell his family and the threat of the immigration officer follows them.

Why I love it – This is not the best romantic comedy ever made, but there are so many things I love about it.  I loved the interaction and chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.  The love/hate back and forth was fun and I could watch those two all day.  They are a great pair and I’d like to see them together again.  I also loved Betty White.  As Gammy she stole the scenes she was in and this was the beginning of her resurgence back into the spotlight, where she rightfully belongs.  The rest of the cast was great and I’ll give a shout out to Ramone, Sitka’s caterer, exotic dancer, and general store clerk.  Every town should have one 🙂

The movie is more funny than romantic and it works.  And we got to see both leads naked, not something every movie has the guts to do.  Thank you, Ryan!  It was supposed to take place in Alaska, but it was mainly filmed in Massachusetts and it was beautiful.  Makes me want to vacation there.  There is nothing new in the plot, but it’s the acting, humor, and the leads that make this a guilty pleasure for me.

2010 Movie Favorites

I love movies and with an infant in the house it is nice that watching movies is something I can share with my husband and still take care of the baby.  So, I’m sure 2011 will bring more moving watching and less book reading.  This year I’ve added reviews of some of my favorite movies- Only You, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, A Few Good Men, Four Weddings And a Funeral, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Romancing the Stone, Silence of the Lambs, Pride & Prejudice miniseries.  The rest of my favorite 100 movies is here.  It’s an ongoing project.
