JO JO WINS!!!!

Yesterday I went the Case Western University book sale and out of the thousands of books, a whole gym full, I managed to come home with these…

book sale

So, here’s the quiz- I am choosing ten of these books and listing the first line from them.  In your comment guess EACH ONE.  You only need to list the title.  I came home with multiple books by Anne Tyler and Jeffery Deaver, but will only include one of their books in the quiz.

For the first person to get THEM ALL CORRECT they will receive an $17 gift card for Barnes & Noble (on-line or store).  That’s $1 for every book I brought home 🙂  Come back and guess as many times as you need to win!

1. Mma Ramotswe had a detective agency in Africa, at the foot of Kgale Hill. – The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency

2. My name is Eva, which means “life,” according to a book of names my mother consulted. – Eve Luna

3. When does murder begin? – Blood Memory

4. His face wet with sweat and with tears, the man runs for freedom, he runs for his life. – The Twelfth Card

5. Each of us has a private Austen – The Jane Austen Book Club

Digital Fortress is the only one of your book finds that I have actually read – I loved it by the way – a great summer beach read.

I have Digging to America at home waiting to be read some day. I wonder which of these lines comes from that book – or did you use a different one of her books for your list instead? You should let me know when you plan to read it and we can read it together.

So here are my guesses – one of which I know is right and the rest are truly guesses:

#1 = The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency
    #2 = Eva Luna
    #3 = The Vanished Man
    #4 = Life of Pi
#5 = The Jane Austen Book Club
    #6 = Blood Memory
    #7 = Skylight Confessions
#8 = Charms for the Easy Life
    #9 = Digital Fortress
    #10 = 700 Sundays

Okay, not bad. You got 4 right! And because you are my first guesser I’ll tell you (and everyone else) that 1,2,5, and 9 are correct! And 4 of the others are just in the wrong spot. It’s like a puzzle, no? I have no idea when I’ll get around to Digging to America, but we can keep each other posted 🙂 Wanna try again?

    • Molly says:

      Yes I will try again:

      #1 = The #1 Ladies Detective Agency
      #2 = Eva Luna
      #3 = Blood Memory
      #4 = The 12th Card
#5 = The Jane Austen Book Club
#6 = Charms for the Easy Life
      #7 = Life of Pi
      #8 = Skylight Confessions
      #9 = Digital Fortress
#10 = The Funny Thing Is

Doh! 9 CORRECT!!! Your hint? All 10 are fiction.

  2. BlogAdmirer says:

    Here’s my guess.

#1 = The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency
    #2 = Eva Luna
#3 = Charms for the Easy Life
    #4 = Blood Memory
#5 = The Jane Austen Book Club
    #6 = The Amateur Marriage
    #7 = Life of Pi
    #8 = Skylight Confessions
    #9 = Digital Fortress
    #10 = The Twelfth Card

Okay, Blog Admirer is ineligible to win (because he sleeps with the quiz maker), but he wanted to play anyway. 1,2,5,9 are again correct. He also got TWO more correct. I won’t tell which ones they were, but I’ll give you this hint…The Amateur Marriage is the only one of his guesses that is not a correct answer in the quiz. The rest are the correct titles, but 5 are in the wrong spots.

  3. jb says:

    1. The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency
    2. Eva Luna
    3. Blood Memory
    4. The Vanished Man
    5. The Jane Austen Book Club
    6. Digging to America
    7. The Funny Thing Is . .
    8. Skylight Confessions
    9. Digital Fortress
    10. Charms for the Easy Life

    Okay, you have 6 correct… 1,2, 3, 5, 8, 9, Getting closer!

  4. Jo-Jo says:

    1. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency
    2. Eva Luna
    3. Blood Memory
    4. The Twelfth Card
    5. The Jane Austen Book Club
    6. Charms for the Easy Life
    7. Life of Pi
    8. Skylight Confessions
    9. Digital Fortress
    10. The Amateur Marriage

The first 9 are correct! From the other guesses, here’e what we know 10 isn’t – Amateur Wife, The Funny Thing Is, 700 Sundays, Steering the Craft, plus whatever else is already correct. I think there are only 3 others it can be. 1 in 3 chance for the next guesser!

  5. Jo-Jo says:

Ok…I know I have read the sentence for no. 10 before because I remember opening that book and reading the first sentence…just haven’t read the actual book yet. So here is my final answer:
    1. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency
    2. Eva Luna
    3. Blood Memory
    4. The Twelfth Card
    5. The Jane Austen Book Club
    6. Charms for the Easy Life
    7. Life of Pi
    8. Skylight Confessions
    9. Digital Fortress
    10. Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant

YOU WIN, JO JO! (do you hear the cheering and applause?)

  6. Margot says:

What a great stack of books. When I first came to your blog the picture was huge (more than half the page) which was nice. I could see every book up close. Looks like you got in on a great sale.

I decided to make it smaller since the quiz was over. Those big pictures can take awhile to load for some people. Glad you got to see it up close 🙂

  7. Jo-Jo says:

Thanks so much Stacy! Can you hear my hootin and hollerin? I just finished Charms for the Easy Life and I really enjoyed that one. This is the first Amazon gift card I’ve ever won! woohoo!

  8. Wrighty says:

I was so bummed when I saw I missed this one! I love when you do these little quizzes. But after looking at them, there weren’t very many that I knew anyway. It looks like you got some great books. Enjoy!
