Deweys 24 Hour Read-a-Thon starts now!

deweys-readathonbuttonHi! Welcome to Stacy’s Books!  I hope to participate for the whole 24 hours.   Here’s the cheat sheet for the day…

1.  I’m joining in the fun from the Cleveland, Ohio area (there are beautiful areas here so don’t believe all the jokes!)

2. I am looking forward the all the books in my pile today, but probably The Firebird by Kearsley and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Zevin the most.

3. There’s a mini peanut butter pie calling my name in the frig!

4. Last night, on one of our weekly date nights, my husband and I ended up at the grocery store and Old Navy.  Yes, I felt incredibly old and boring.

5. The last read-a-thon I made the mistake of choosing the shortest books from my TBR piles even if I didn’t really want to read them so I burned out on not so good books fast.  This time I’ve chosen ones I’m excited about reading.  This is my 4th read-a-thon and I think I’ve made it the whole 24 hours twice.  That’s not bad.

Dewey’s Read-a-Thon Wrap-Up

Twice, I’ve been able to do the whole 24 hours, but this time around I dragged myself to bed at 4am.  I made it 20 hours 🙂  I’m ok with that. I think I made a mistake in my book selection this year and that’s why I couldn’t power through. That or the stressful week caught up with me. I woke up at 10 find that I’d won a prize in the last hour, woo hoo!

A Readathon tradition!

  1. Which hour was most daunting for you? I started having a hard time around 1:30 and couldn’t get past it.  Threw in the towel at 4.
  2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?  I made the mistake of pulling short books from my shelves, ones that I had no real desire to read at the time. Choose a thriller, a humor book, and one graphic novel to start your pile and go from there.
  3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? As it is every year, it was perfect from the organizing end. Lots of fun challenges and prizes.
  4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?  I think everything worked, except I wish the cheerleaders didn’t have to wade through so many different formats for participants.  Maybe divide up tumblr, booktube, goodreads, twitter, facebook, foreign languages, blogs into separate lists?  Hm, now that I type that I see the problem 😉
  5. How many books did you read? I finished 5, started 1 and continued some listening of The Passage.
  6. What were the names of the books you read? Seduction by Brenda Joyce, A Gracious Plenty by Sheri Reynolds, I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt, The Diving Bell & the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby are the ones I finished.
  7. Which book did you enjoy most? A Gracious Plenty by Sheri Reynolds was the bright spot of the day. LOVED IT
  8. Which did you enjoy least? I feel bad saying this and maybe it was because I was struggling to stay awake, but I didn’t care for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
  9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders?  This was my first year committing so much time to cheering and I had fun. Try to have something generic (a cheer you wrote, a quote…ready to go so you can add that on to anything personal you might say. It will help you cheer a little faster.
  10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?  Absolutely!  I love the read-a-thon. There were so many new faces this time so a new group has fallen in love too!

Thank you so much ladies for all the hard work you put in to make it fantastic for everyone. You rocked it 🙂

Updates and Mini Challenges

I am soooo tired  It’s almost 2:30 am and I’m struggling. I am listening to The Passage. I have no expectation of finishing but I am on disc 20 so it’s giving my eyes a break now and then.  I have finished 2 short books since the halfway mark, I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron and Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit. I’m almost halfway through The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby.

Thanks for the cheers and encouragement 🙂

I’m doing 2 mini challenges

I don’t collect rare books, but last year Jason got me a signed Outlander and signed first Harry Potter. And last year When I met Chelsea Cain at Bouchercon she gave me a signed severed finger to go with my first edition hardcover of Heartsick.  Cool 🙂

Read-a-Thon Best of Challenge

I haven’t participated in enough mini-challenges so I’m giving this one a shot.

I’m supposed to choose 3 categories and give you my picks from my reading year.

Best Mystery Book of Your Reading Year – Without a doubt it’s Still Life by Louise Penny.  I have A Fatal Grace, the second in the series as possibility for read-a-thon reading but I’ll probably stick to shorter books.

Best Setting of Your Reading Year – Loved the Scotland setting of The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley.  Loved the book too so it’s a win-win.

Best Author of Your Reading Year – This goes to Beth Hoffman. Her second book, Looking for Me, was another winner and she is a regular commenter here on the blog (thank you) and a wonderful and warm woman in person. I was lucky to be able to see her speak during her book tour. Love her.

There are more categories but I want to get back to reading 🙂

Books on Books Mini-Challenge – Closed, winner

Welcome Read-a-Thon friends!  I’m in it for the whole 24 hours today, not a luxury I get every time.  Obviously we all love books.  I went through my shelves this week and pulled the ones that have books on the cover and then I threw (carefully placed) some leaves from our maple tree on them and took a picture.

I’m giving away $24 to Barnes & Noble (US winner) OR the Book Depository (international).

There are 2 ways to enter

1. Guess as many of the titles you can in my picture.  12 entries available (1 for every correct answer). I’ll periodically hide your comments so you won’t be tempted to cheat 😉

AND/OR

2. Pull some books from your own shelves that have books on the cover, take a picture, post it, and post the link in the comment section.  Good for 6 entries.

I hope you are all having fun and I’ll be by to visit everyone who enters 🙂

I’ll be drawing for a winner at 6 pm EST (hour 11)

1readathonThe Uncommon Reader, Gunn’s Golden Rules, Life As We Know It, The 13th Tale, The Lost Memories of Jane Austen, The Reader, Bridget Jones’s Diary, This Book is Overdue!, The Know-It-All, How to Buy a Love of Reading, My Reading Life, The Last Lecture If you want to extend your break time I do have a Tom Clancy quiz posted too.

It’s Read-a-Thon time!

Woo Hoo!  My birthday was yesterday and I told Jason all I wanted for a present was 24 hours to participate in the read-a-thon (+recovery time) without any mother duties.  I think he considers himself lucky that he didn’t have to come up with some great gift. I did that myself 🙂

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?  I’m in the Cleveland area of Ohio.
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?  Not sure, to be honest. I pulled a lot of short books from shelves and hope  they call my name when it time to choose.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I don’t really have one but I might go to a coffee shop later to eat and read.

4) Tell us a little something about yourself!  Well yesterday I turned 21 twice  (a nice way of saying I turned 42). Next week my husband and I will celebrate our 15 year anniversary in Vermont and my son will turn 3 the day after we get back.  Mid October is a big time around here!
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I want to take more time connecting and participating. I want to do more mini-challenges and  a little more cheering.  I plan on making it the whole 24 hours just like the last 2 times 🙂

So, what are YOUR plans for the day?

24 Hour Read-A-Thon Hour 16 Time Flies Mini-Challenge – CLOSED

Thanks to all of you who played! Keep reading 🙂  The first reader to get all 13 books correct is Megan (YA? Why Not?) and she will receive a $24 B&N giftcard.  The secondly winner (randomly chosen by drawing names out of a hat) is Dilatory Bibliophile and she will receive a $12 B&N giftcard.  Congratulations, readers, I’ll be in touch 🙂  I’ll be stopping by everyone who played along in the next few days to say hi.

Hi read-a-thonners!  I hope you’re all still awake and having fun.  There are two ways to play this mini-challenge…I made a fall Read-a-thon Clock (yes, it looked more like a clock in my mind ;)).  Just tell me the titles and you could win a prize, the reader with the most correct answers wins a prize. (in the event of a tie the first person to submit their answers will win)  If you get even one title correct I’ll throw your name in the drawing for a second prize.  Keep in mind that each number on the clock is correctly represented and don’t forget about the book in the center.

I’ll periodically hide the comments so don’t be worried if your answers disappear until I draw a winner at 1 AM.

(I apologize for the quality of the clock.  My camera died so I had to use my cell phone) You should be able to click on it to make it bigger.

There’s a second way to play…Make your own clock and post it on your blog.  Make sure each of the titles has something to do with time.  Make sure to leave a link in the comments.  You’ll be eligible for the second prize.

Wanna know what you’re playing for?  First prize (reader who guesses the most correct titles in my clock) will get a $24 Barnes & Noble giftcard.  The second randomly chosen winner will receive a $12 Barnes & Noble giftcard. (If you are not in the US I can do Book Depository)

If  you still want to extend your break with something bookish I do have another quiz going on with prizes.  The link is here.

Read-a-Thon,8 am, I made it!

lg new readathonbutton borderThe time is here.  I turned 40 this month and I have a 1-year-old.  My parents are here to help with Gage, but there’s nothing I can do about an already sleep deprived body.  I hope to make it the whole 24 hours, but that’s just a goal and not one I’ll obssess over if I can’t make it.  I have lots of short books for challenges and 2 audio books for when my eyes need a rest.  I’m looking forward to 24 hours devoted to my favorite hobby.

I’ll update on this post every hour or two, but do any challenges on a separate post.

1)Where are you reading from today?  Cleveland, Ohio
2)Three random facts about me…  I’m short (5’2″ is pushing it), love to play board games and cards, have colored my heair since my early 20’s because of a gray streak.
3)How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours?  About 10 to choose from (all for challenges)
4)Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)?  I want to make it the whole 24 hours.
5)If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, any advice for people doing this for the first time?  I’ve only done it once and did make the whole 24.  Choose shorter, fast-paced books and have an audio book for those early morning hours so that you can move (laying on the couch at 6 am is a very bad idea!)

It’s 10:15 am and I’m 174 pages into my first book.  See if you can guess what it is (This is for One Librarian’s Book Mini Challenge)

 with

I’ve read the whole time except for kissing Gage goodbye and stopping to check in here once an hour.

It’s 12:20 and time for me to change into my bathing suit, step outside in the 50 degree weather, and sink into the hot tub with my current book, Earthly Posssessions by Anne Tyler.  Not loving it so far.  I finished Sprinkle with Murder, thumbs up.  Page count is up to 251.  I’ve participated in 2 more mini-challenges.  What a great day so far 🙂

Is it really 3:30 already?  I finished Earthly Possessions (that’s 2 books read) and have done some reading on a book I cracked open a few weeks ago.  I also listened to Roots in the car on my way to the martini bar where I sat and read Three Junes while I sipped in a cappuccino martini, a book and martini, not bad for a Saturday afternoon right?  Now I’m home and reading to delve more deeply into Three Junes.  I’ve read 460 pages and listened to about 25 minutes of Roots so far today.

It’s 7:25 pm and I’m getting ready to head out to find a place to eat and read that isn’t packed.  And I’ll be listening to Roots in the car.  Still reading Three Junes and am liking it okay.  I’ve done a few mini-challenges and think they’ve been really great this time around.  Happy reading everyone!

It’s 9 pm Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now?  Three Junes, What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day, Roots
2. How many books have you read so far? I’ve finished 2
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? staying awake and lisening to an audio books so I can visit a few other blogs.
4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day?  Yep.  My parents came for the weekend to help with Gage.
5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? There is a baby in the house so there have been a few here and there, but nothing more than 5 or 10 minutes.
6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far?  how much fun it is and I’ve enjoyed the mini-challenges as well.
7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? nothing I can think of now.
8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year?  Get a good night’s sleep the night before (that didn’t happen for me and I’m already tired).
9. Are you getting tired yet? Guess I gave away too much info in the answer above 🙂
10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered? I left the house twice, listening to my audio in the car and finding a place to eat and read.  A change of scenery is good.

11:30 pm and I’m listening to Roots so I can do a little blog hopping and let my eyes have a change of pace.  I finished Three Junes by Julia Glass, so that makes 3 books read.  I’m on disc 21 of 24 of Roots and plan to finish it sometime during the read-a-thon.  I’ll listen whenever I need to move.  I was also able to start What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day by Cleage and am enjoying it.  I think I might be able to finish it.  We’ll see.  I’m still hopeful I can make it all night.

2:30 am Still awake, but moving and reading a lot slower! Still listening to Roots and reading What Looks Like Crazy.   A Buckeye Girl Reads asks us about our pets and reading.  Some of you probably remember when Max read War & Peace with me last year…. Today we’ve had a busy place so haven’t seen much of him.  However, my cat Scout, cuddled me when I read in bed this morning.  She likes to rub her mouth on the books, making it difficult to read, but perfect for cuddling.

It’s 6:50 am and I’m still awake.  There were a few iffy moments between 4:30-5:30 and I was ready to head to bed, but I just wanted to finish Roots and What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day.  So I did and now I have enough of a second wind to get me through the last hour.  I finished 5 books!  I only had 5 cds of Roots to go when I started so really it’s like 4 and a quarter 🙂  I’m going to start listening to The Quickening on the Playaway I got from the library.  It’s my first time trying one.

Oh, I’ve been doing quite a few of the mini challenges and I WON!  Little Black Dress by McBride is heading to Cleveland.  I’ll try and stop by for one more update at 8.

8am wrap up

I did it!!  I’m surprised and happy.  I completed 5 books and started a 6th.  I gave myself permission to leave the house and find fun places to read.  I could not have not participated if not got my awesome husband and parents.  I’m a lucky girl to have them.    So now I’m off to bed to get 6 hours of sleep before mommy duty commences once again.  The read-a-thon was a perfect mommy vacation.

  • Which hour was most daunting for you?  4:30-5:30 was rough
  • Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?  I think mysteries are good because they move fast and the shorter the better.  I remember last readathon I read a humor book in the wee hours and that was good.  Laughing wakes you up!
  • Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?  I thought everything was great.  All planners, hosts and cheerers were perfect.
  • What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? I liked the mini challenges.  There was a good variety.
  • How many books did you read? 5
  • What were the names of the books you read? Sprinkle with Murder (McKinlay), Earthly Possessions (Tyler), Three Junes (Glass), Roots (Haley), What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinarty Day (Cleage)
  • Which book did you enjoy most?  Sprinkle with Murder for the purpose of the read-a-thon, but Roots for reading.
  • Which did you enjoy least? I don’t know.  I was underwhelmed by most of them.
  • If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? Stop by often!
  • How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?  I would love to do this again.  My parents love any excuse to come up here for a visit.  I think I’d like to host a mini-challenge next time.

I had a great ime in my first read-a-thon and look forward to posting this and heading to bed.  Even as the sunslight streams into the room.

The Final Few Hours Are Here!

dreamstime_readathongI just finished listening to the audio book Manhunting by Jennifer Crusie.  It was nice to be mobile for a few hours.  The light, fluffy romance was perfect for this time of the morning, except maybe the end dragged a bit.  Of course, it could be that anything is going to drag a bit when I’m this tired!

Books finished-5

Pages read – 830

Hours spent listening to audio book – 7 hours

I think I have just enough time to read The Postman Always Rings Twice.
