Almost Always by Bobbi Reed – my Mom stops by for a review

Almost AlwaysAlmost Always. Published in 2012, 320 pages

When Bobbi contacted me in October and asked me to read her book I said yes right away.  She is a fellow buckeye and the cover was too cute to resist.  As I took it with me on our Thanksgiving trip home I realized that I might not get this read much before Christmas so I asked my Mom if she would read it and post a few thoughts.  She said yes 🙂  I hope to read it soon, especially since my mom loved it so much.  Thanks, Mom!

Here’s the way Eva sees it: if John is so concerned about her butting into strangers’ lives, he shouldn’t leave her sitting at a table in Bob Evans with nothing to occupy her time . . .

Enter Cecelia-a pregnant teenager who needs a family for her baby.  Fate has placed her at the table behind Eva and John.

Now Eva has a chance-a chance to give her daughter, Shelly, the one thing Shelly desperately wants.

But nothing is ever as easy as it seems.

Because sometimes daughters are not born to us-they are gifted by desperate teenagers-or seated behind us at Bob Evans . . .

Mom’s take…

Eva is a kind-hearted meddler who does her best to influence others to make the same choices she would make.  She tries to orchestrate things to fit her idea of a perfect outcome.  It is entertaining to see how this personality trait plays out in Eva’s interactions with her family and friends.  In the process of trying to fix up others’ lives, she makes a few mistakes.

This book encompasses so much more than Eva trying to find a baby for her daughter.  She longs for the ‘Mommy days’ when she was the most important person in the world and could make her children happy.

I was easily drawn to the characters and the story line.   Everyone can find some things to relate to in the book that will make you laugh and cry.

This was a great read that I couldn’t put down.  I loved it and highly recommend it.

So, how many unread books do I have?

I let you guys see my unread book wall and asked you to guess how many books you thought were in the stacks (here). Answers ranged from 350 to 1000!  As I cleaned everything up I realized that 3 books were missing from the stacks, but I can’t count them since they’re not in the picture.  Here’s the picture again…

You are looking at 769 books!  Many of you came close, but the one who was closest was Jen (Wander One Day) with her guess of 775.  She was only 6 off!  That is impressive.  Also impressive was the runner-up who was only 8 off and that was Kay (formerly of Purple Sage and Scorpions) with her guess of 761.  Jen will get to choose a book for herself from my stacks 🙂

Thank you all for humoring my yearly obsession.  One day I’ll get all of these read and they’ll move into my permanent library. Or if  I hate them I may offer them to you!

Oh, and since I took this shot a few weeks ago 4 new books have found their way into my house 🙂

B is for Book Problem, Year 6 QUIZ

Before I started blogging I had spent 5 years working for Barnes & Noble so I was no stranger to books (and book discounts!).  I had a sizeable library and was happy with my reading to book ratio.  Then I started blogging and all tomes broke loose!  Every year in May I would stack up my unread books in one place and take and inventory of sorts.  Here’s my picture from that first year in 2008…

At the time I didn’t even do a count.

New motherhood being what it was I skipped last year’s wall building.  But then I felt like my books have slowly been taking over every room in the house so I decided it was time to rebuild the wall.  I always rebuild the same way every year so I can find all of the books. (yes, this is silly, but I sometimes get a little OCD about my books).  Two years ago my stacks looked like this

A little bigger at 604.  So, in a marathon of book balancing done while my little one was sleeping I rebuilt the wall minus the 20 some books I read and the 20 odd books I gave away…

Janet 088

And then added in the books I’ve acquired in the last two years.  Needless to say, I got a great workout hauling all these books around the house, but worry about next year’s wall of books if I don’t start reading more!

Okay, now for the QUIZ -Open to anyone- Guess the number of unread books I have in my house by looking at this last picture.  The person who comes closest by Sunday will help me out by choosing one book from the picture as a gift.  (I did at least give you a few numbers from two years ago :))

For all my regulars – I will be awarding points based on how close you get to the real number.

2012 in review

The blog, while still having some of the same features-Tuesday Quizzes, Sundays with Gage and Monthly 5 Word Movie Reviews being the constants- also managed some book reviews 😉  I read 55 books, a new low since I began blogging 5 years ago.

Here are the books by the numbers-

43 Fiction, 12 Non-Fiction (that’s a high percentage of non-fiction for me!)

39 women, 15 men, 1 both (let’s hear it for the gals!)

9 from a continuing series, 7 from a new series.  (of those new series books I will continue on with 6!)

Most read author? Karen E Olson with 3 when I finished up her Tattoo Shop series.

The 3 Rounds of Quizzes this year were exciting!  Nise (Under the Boardwalk) took the first two rounds and Hannah (Word Lily) was the winner of the last round.  I hope that you all will jump in when the new season starts.  You don’t have to win to get a prize.  Marie (Boston Bibliophile), Staci (Life in the Thumb), and Carol M all won special prizes just for playing.  If you want to browse through old quizzes click here.

Gage has been a big part of the blog this year.  If you want to look through all his posts for what you may have missed click here.  Here are the first and last photos of 2012.

Think he’s changed this year?  The boy sure does keep me busy.

The year I’ve watched 49 new-to-me movies, reviewed 3 from my Top 100 list, wrote 3 book vs. movies posts, and even had a few Friday Movie Talks.  My monthly 5 word movie reviews are tied to money for charity.  You still have a few hours (until 7om EST) to get your reviews in to be counted for charity.  $1 for every 5 word review you contribute.  I already told you about my favorite movies, what about a few stats?

Surprisingly, I watched more movies released in 2012 (19) than in any other.  Surprising because I consider myself a classic movie lover!

The oldest movie I watched was War and Peace released in 1956.

My most viewed actor- Denzel Washington, 3 movies

Most viewed actress- Helena Bonham Carter, 4 movies (weird since this woman really bothers me)

2012 has been a good year and I’m happy the Mayans were wrong and there is the possibility of 2013 being better than all the other years before it.  I wish that for all of us.

Sundays with Gage & My favorite books and movies of 2012

015This has been a fun year with Gage.  I think the year and a half range is my favorite age 🙂  Now that he’s 2 plus a few Gage’s role on the blog will be changing in 2013.  He’ll still be here, doing some book reviews, special events, showing up in Saturday Snapshots, and just to say hi.  He won’t be a stranger, but Sundays with Gage will be a thing of the past.  I hate to do it because Gage is much more popular that most of my book reviews, but it will be nice not to have the pressure of writing a post every Sunday.  If you truly need a consistent Gage update I would be happy to be friends on Facebook where I will be updating more.  Thank you all so much for your loving and kind words about my kid, I think he’s wonderful too 🙂  And expect to see him in the next week or so reviewing a very awesome book about a dog.  And he might be giving something away too.  See, he’ll be taking a more grown-up role around here!

As you can see, Gage refused to give me a smile when he realized this was his last Sundays with Gage.

This has been a very slow reading year for me, so I’m going to do a top 5 list instead of 10 for my favorite movies and books.  Let me know if you’ve read any of them!

Top 5 Books

BelovedBeloved by Toni Morrison. Part of my Ohio tour and I am looking forward to reading more from this universally beloved author.

The Violets of MarchThe Violets of March by Sarah Jio.  The book was as great that sweet cover.

In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad Series #1)In the Woods by Tana French.  So glad that this was the last book I read this year.  Ended on a high note!

ItIt by Stephen King. Loved taking part in my first read-along.  The It-a-long rocked!

Stories I Only Tell My FriendsStories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe.  I can only vouch for the audio read by Lowe himself.  I was charmed by it.

Favorite 5 Movies of 2012

The Hunger Games, 2012.  I have not read the books but loved the movie.

Looper, 2012. Loved this time-travel thriller.  I think I have a crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey, 2012.  It’s so nice to go back to Middle Earth, disappointed it’s going to be one of three Hobbit movies.

The Secret Life of Bees, 2008.  Loved the book and the movie, a rarity.

It’s Complicated, 2009.  I love Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin and this movie delivered.

Sundays with Gage and some birthday winners

First, Birthday Winners!!  Lloyd is winner #1, Tara is winner #2, Nise is winner #3.  Lloyd, if you read this before I send an email let me know which book you want from my Bouchercon stack (pic here).  (Winners randomly chosen by Jason)  Thanks for stopping by this week and leaving comments!

We went to a pumpkin festival today and I thought I’d share some pics from the morning…

It’s a beautiful fall day here.  Hope it is where you are too!

My Ohio author tour

Last week I posted about the Ohioana Book Festival and it has inspired me to spend the rest of this month and June reading Ohio authors.  Maybe it will last longer I don’t know, there are so many authors to choose from.  Although Ohio has a rich history of renowned authors I think I’m going to focus on author’s still writing today.  I’m hoping to discover a few new faces.  I think this could be a good challenge for any of you wanting to discover your home states and invite you to join me.

A few authors I’ll be reading…

Regina Brett (newspaper columnist and Pulitzer Prize finalist)

Les Roberts (a Cleveland transplant.  Love his Milan mystery series)

Carrie Bebris (a festival discovery)

Susan Gee Heino (another festival discovery who writes historical romances)

Julie Anne Lindsey (a self-published festival discovery whose title and cover made me buy her book)

Thrity Umrigar (Another Cleveland transplant who I met at a book signing)

Bob Adamov (writes a series of books about Put-in-Bay, the island next to the one we spent a week at every year)

Karen Harper, Casey Daniels…

I really don’t think I’ll be able to read all of these by the end of June, but I can hope!  Or maybe I’ll find even more authors I have to read and continue all summer 🙂

Sundays with Gage – A Neighbor AND an Author

It’s no secret that the Cleveland area is left-leaning politically.  I consider myself an independent voter, but due to some unfair laws in Ohio I had to declare myself a democrat to vote in a chosen primary.  I wasn’t very happy about it, but it did lead to one good thing.  I was able to be a polling location coordinator (only possible if you are the party of the current governor, sort of, there are some really weird laws out there).  Anyway, election days are long and can be made longer if the people you are working with are, um, let’s just go with ‘fun-challenged’.  That day I had a great group and that was due in large part to My Republican and his lovely wife.  As a coordinator I was in charge of lots of paperwork and most things had to be signed by a republican and a democrat.  All well and good unless there is a big shortage of republicans.  Bob, spent the better part of the day laughingly responding to my frequent calls of “Where’s my republican?”  He was seriously such a great sport about it and he was full of positive and happy energy all day long that he made my day a lot easier.  Don’t worry, I think this story is going somewhere.

Flash forward a few years and nice fall day when my parents were visiting and we all went out for a walk and decided to stop by an open house down the street.  The door opens and Bob greets me by name and I greet him with, “My Republican!”  Come to find out that Bob wrote a children’s book (and turned independent) and I knew I’d have to get my hands on a copy.  So, Gage and I went by this week to pick up a copy of The Littlest Lamppost.  As you can see, Gage thinks Bob is a fun guy 🙂

This is the story of a real highway lamppost by the Cleveland airport.  Why is he so small compared to all the other posts around him and how does he feel about it?  This is the story of how and why he was made the way he was.  The story is a sweet one to read with an older child and has a great moral lesson.  It’s all about loving yourself and others even when some of us may be different from everyone else.  It just means that we have a special reason for being here.

I thought the story was great and I know that Gage and I will be reading it together in a year or two.  It’s never too early for children to understand that different is just different, and it doesn’t mean it’s bad or something to make fun of.  I am looking forward to my next trip that takes me by the airport so I can look for the littlest lamppost.

The Littlest Lamppost is available through Amazon and directly through the Littlest Lamppost’s website www.littlestlamppost.com.  The Littlest Lamppost also tweets ( @llamppost ) and has a facebook page www.facebook.com/littlestlamppost !

I told the story about how I met Bob because I thought it showed what a great sense of humor he has.  He never once took offense and instead spread good cheer the whole day long and was also very gracious when Gage and I stopped by.  I am happy to recommend his book!

Today begins year 5!

On January 7, 2008, I started this blog as a way to keep track of what I was reading and after four years I’ve reviewed every book I’ve read.  That’s 382 books.  As I look at that number and then check my 5 star ratings I see that I’m terribly stingy, only 14 of those reviews earned a 5 star rating.

I’ve enjoyed blogging and like the creative aspect as well as the community of book lovers I come in contact with every day.  I love doing my weekly quizzes (but I’m always hoping more people will participate) and talking about movies.  I plan on doing a few new things with movies this year that I’m excited about.

Blogging used to be something that I could spend hours a day doing, writing and visiting other blogs, but with the arrival of Gage in October 2010 that is no longer a luxury I have. Last fall I had to seriously clean out my Google Reader.  I felt bad eliminating some blogs that I loved, but I had to make time for the people who actual comment or email me directly.  This has helped, although I’m always weeks behind with some of you.  I only have and hour or so a night so sacrifices must be made.  This is the year that I plan to start replying to comments.  I have been hit or miss on this in the past, but it’s a new goal.

The popularity of Sundays with Gage has been a nice surprise for me.  I’m a fairly private person – I hate airing dirty laundry and such, but it’s been refreshing for me to share some of my thoughts on motherhood and have you share yours.  I plan to continue because you seem like it and so do I!  When Gage tells me to stop embarrassing him, I will 🙂

I hope that my loyal blogging buddies and new ones alike will stick around this year.  I’m feeling like I’ve still got more to say.  I am inspired everyday when I open up my Google Reader and see what you very smart readers have to say.  Thanks for making me smarter.

If you haven’t entered my giveaway for Thrity Umrigar’s latest, The World We Found, go here.  You have until Tuesday to enter for a signed copy.

*the change is format is just for today, I think.
