I told myself, as I watched the beating, that it was all too fast, that I was just dazed, and there was no time to react.  What we call cowardice is often just another name for being taken by surprise, and courage is seldom any better than simply being well prepared.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, Chapter 3

This is a big book and it will take me awhile to finish.  This isn’t the last time you’ll see it on a Tuesday 🙂

What is this book about? I like the cover. Yes, I do judge some books by their cover 🙂

An Australian prison escapee makes his new life in India. It is a novel based on the author’s life. I’m only a few hundred pages in, but if you have an interest in India (or even if you liked Slumdog Millionaire) this is a beautiful novel. It weighs in at 933 pages 🙂

Your teaser tells me the book is thought provoking – all this what is courage and cowardice. It would take me a while to finish too. Looking forward to more.

Absolutely. I am taking my time. Of course, I always have at least two books going at the same time 🙂

933 pgs! Whoa, that’s a real time consumer. hope it’s fantastic. Sounds interesting anyway. My initial link was faulty so try
    here

I have no idea how long it will take me to finish, but it is really good.

    Wow! 933 pages?!

I love big books actually, the thicker the better, but only when I’ve got the time to immerse myself in them!

    Hope you enjoy the book!

    The bigger the better 😉

Interesting teaser! Very thought-provoking… Somehow I am thinking you might find yourself staying up a little more to get a couple more pages in (and then a little more to finish the book entirely)! 🙂

I always slow read the first half of a book this size. And then find myself picking up the pace around the halfway mark. If I starting devouring it now I wouldn’t sleep or shower for days!

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. I read Shantaram with my book club a couple of summers ago, and I loved it! His writing throughout this whole book is very thought provoking and just beautiful! Did you know that Johnny Depp bought the movie rights for this novel? Haven’t heard much about that recently though.

I had heard that about Johnny Depp, but not details.

Karen patted the mare’s neck. “Estrela, you’re not a trickle of wasted intentions. You’re a gentle rain.” Karen looked over at me. “And so are you.” She kissed me with those sweet words.

Chapter 19 of Deborah Smith’s ‘A Gentle Rain’

I am really enjoying this book.
