We Have a Quiz Winner!

I want to thank you all for playing along with my new quiz format.  It’s so much fun playing book games with you 🙂  The final results are here.   The next round will begin March 9th.  On to the winners…

Jennifer of Rayment’s Rants & Ramblings has won my First Quiz Series!!!  Out of a possible 300 points over 3 weeks Jennifer earned 235 points.  Since this was a trial run of my Quizzes that are worth something the prize will be an easy one.  Jennifer gets her pick of one of the books in Tuesday’s quiz.  Congratulations, Jennifer!!!

And because Scout was jealous that Max was helping with the blog yesterday she wanted to help me pick the winner today…

So, the randomly chosen winner from the rest of the participants and the next winner is Cee Cee of Book Splurge!!  To make this easy on me (can you tell that I’m hours aways from vacation?) Cee Cee will get second choice of a book from Tuesday’s quiz. Congratulations Cee Cee!!!

Bring on the Cable Cars!

Jason & I will be heading out to San Francisco for a mini vacation next week and we’ll be there six days.  Well, okay, Jason will be working a lot of the time, but I’ll be busy exploring.  We’ve both been there once.  I was there for a few days in  1994 mainly to visit friends and Jason was there for a few days of work a few years ago, but didn’t get to see much.

So, I’m planning our trip and I’m wondering if any of you have a favorite place or activity that you think we should see.  Or maybe a bookstore I shouldn’t miss?  I’d love some recommendations!

You Choose 50 of the Books I read in 2010

UPDATE – Voting Closed.  Results are here.

So, a few weeks ago I came up with this really great idea of letting the readers decide 50 of the books that I read next year.  They had to be from my over 300 books and each person can only vote for 5.  When the first few votes came in it was fun.  Then a few more came in, still fun, but began to wonder what I had gotten myself into.  The next day I began to think that I hadn’t really thought this whole thing through.  It’s almost 2 weeks and 62 voters later and I have embraced the challenge.  I mean what’s not to love about having to read War & Peace?

There is still time to vote!  Please stop by my post and peruse my titles and vote for up to 5. If you click on each of the pictures they will enlarge for easier viewing. I am committed to reading the top 50 vote getters (if there’s a tie I will choose which ones to read).  I am out of town until Tuesday, but when I get back I will choose one participant to win a $20 B&N gift card.  Actually, Jason will choose randomly.

So, if you haven’t voted already, please do.  The more votes I have the better chance that my 2010 reading list will be awesome 🙂  You have until Tuesday evening.

Go here to look at the titles and vote.  See you all Tuesday 🙂  Right now A Prayer for Owen Meany and She’s Come Undone are the top vote getters with 10 votes apiece.

My Secret Santa

bookbloggerholidayswap

I have been remiss in not telling you about my wonderful Secret Santa!  A few weeks ago I received a package in the mail from Bliss at My Shelf Runneth Over.  Here’s what I found when I opened it.

First, I have to say how much I love that card!  How cute are all those puppies?  And then she sent me one of her favorite books ever, The History of Love.  I’d never heard of it but when I put it with hundreds of others in my tbr pile, others saw it.  I think it’s gotten 3 votes already for me to read next year, so it must be a favorite of a few other book lovers 🙂  And she included a beautiful looking and smelling soap.  I started using it right away and I love it! Don’t I have a great Secret Santa?

I feel very bad about how few of you I’ve visited this week.  I am celebrating Christmas at my Grandma’s party today, where I plan on collecting a few more gifts, but hope to start catching up on my blog reading when I get home on Sunday.

You will choose 50 of the books I will read next year.  If you help me you could win a $20 gift card to Barnes & Noble.  Go here to vote. (Right now the top vote getter is A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving)

Happy Pardoning the Turkey Day!

Tomorrow I will be with family, being thankful for my life.  I am truly blessed.  I hope that all of you will all be with loved ones, celebrating all of the good things.  I am very thankful for all of my wonderful blogging buddies and wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving.

Today President  Obama pardons a turkey.  Heather at The Secret Adventures of a Writer Girl  featured this clip a few days ago and I loved it.  You don’t have to be a fan of the show to appreciate it.  Enjoy two minutes of fun 🙂

Kelley’s Island

I hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day weekend.  Today we are heading to Kelley’s Island for the week.  It is a short drive (less than 1 1/2 hours) and it is a small island in Lake Erie.  We rented a house there a few years ago and this year we’ve rented a condo.  There’s no bridge, so we have to take a ferry.   There is a winery (they also have great pizza) and a nice butterfly preserve.  It is a relaxing place in the off season.  Which starts tomorrow.

I have a couple of reviews that will be posted this week AND and interview with Carly Phillips with A GIVEAWAY!  Check back on Friday for that.  So, I’ll have posts up this week, but you won’t see any of my oh-so-witty comments  til we get back.  Have a great week!

Half Year Round Up

Obviously, I missed the exact 6 month mark, but close enough for me!  I’ve enjoyed seeing other recaps for the year so far and thought I’d take stock of where I am.

Books read – 68    Goal for the year – 130 – This goal is definitely doable, but I’m wishing I hadn’t set my goal so high!

Books I’ve added to my Top 100 list so far this yearThe Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, Watchers by Dean Koontz, The Time Machine by HG Wells, Joy School by Elizabeth Berg, The Pigman by Paul Zindel, The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil by John Berendt.

Challenge Progress-

readown3

Read Your Own Books challenge – My goal is 50 and I’ve read 40 so far.  I’m feeling pretty good about this one!

A-Z Challenge – I chose the difficult path of reading a title AND and author for each letter of the alphabet.  That is 52 total.  At the moment I am 9 short, but the 2 books I’m currently reading will count for this which will get me down to 7.  Shouldn’t be a problem.

Southern Reading challenge – 3 books in 3 months.  I’ve finished 2 and have to read the last one by August 15th.  Not worried.

everythingausten1Everything Austen challenge – 6 books or movies before Jan 1st.  I’m currently listening to my first one in the car.  Still have plenty of time.

New things on my blog this year

My 9 in ’09 author interviews.  I’ve done 10 so far and have enjoyed the authors who have participated. I still have not gotten a male author to say yes!  I’m working on that.

Quizzes on Mondays.  Sometimes I make them too hard, but I love when you guess anyway!  My censored covers seems to be the most popular.  Maybe you’ll see it again on Monday 🙂

My favorite movie reviews.  This is relatively new.  I came up with my favorite 100 movie list and started writing mini-reviews of these movies.  I’ve only done 3 so far, but look forward to more.

And finally, the post that generated my favorite comments –I loved the responses to my Book Problem Year 2  post.  Everyone refused to believe my piles had gotten smaller!

And thanks for helping me clear my shelves. So far this year I’ve sent readers 28 books from my shelves.  I always post these on the 1st or 2nd  of each month.
