Monday Movie Meme – Comic Books

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about Comic Books…Share on your blog those comic book characters and collectors in film that you prefer, linking back here at The Bumbles.

I’ve never been into comic books, so my favorite movies based on comics are the basics.  I first fell in love with  I loved the first two movies.

And while I liked Michael Keaton’s Batman I didn’t love the movies until Christian Bale came on board. I like the darker side.

I also like  and. And I did enjoy The Punisher for some reason.  Any comic book readers out there?  Did I miss a great one?

Monday Movie Meme- Family Dynamics

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
You’re only as interesting as the family you come from. Many of us spend a lot of time hiding those “interesting” family moments! The movies are filled with dynamic families creating all sorts of food for thought and sources of laughter. Share on your blog the families the movies portray that struck a chord with you.
Visit the Bumbles for more movie selections.

1. While You Were Sleeping (1995) I love this movie as much for the great Callaghans as for the love story.  Peter Boyle, Glynis Johns, Jack Warden, and Micole Mercurio were the glue that held this story together and made every scene fun to watch.  I loved the leads too (Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullman and Peter Gallagher) but the family was the fourth main character.  This is #25 on my Favorite Movie list.

2. My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) The Portokalos family must come to terms with their daughter not marrying a Greek, but the audience just gets to sit back and smile, thankful that they are not our family.

3. Meet the Parents (2000) So, how bad can things really go when you take home your boyfriend for a family wedding?  Pretty bad if the head of that family is Jack Byrnes and the boyfriend is Gaylord Focker.  With a name like Focker you just knew there was going to be trouble.  This movie makes me laugh, a lot.  The second one not quite as much, but still funny.  I’m hoping the one coming out this month with the Focker children will be funny too.  This is one of my top 10 Favorite Movies.

4. Dan in Real Life (2007) This is one of those big family movies where all the kids and grandkids get together and hijinks ensue.  I am an only child, so these movies always make me wish I’d had a sibling or two.  This movie was funny, but tackled  more serious issues too.

5. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) I thought I’d add one movie that wasn’t a comedy.  This movie was all about complicated family dynamics and it has powerhouse performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp.  Another one on my Favorite Movie list.

Do you have a favorite family in film?

Monday Movie Meme- Travel

This week’s movie topic is all about Movies That Make You Want To Travel…
(Visit The Bumbles for more travel choices)

So this week it’s all about movies that make us want to travel.  I loved our trip to Italy (as I’ve mentioned a lot lately) and there are a few movies that take me back and make me want to fly back immediately.  Summertime (1955) is a great movie to see the magic of the city.  Loved it.  Casanova (2005) is a so-so movie but I loved seeing the city in its glory days.  Both Only You (1994) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) both gave screen time to the canal city.  Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) and Roman Holiday (1953) are favorites that highlight the other two places we visited. How about these pictures from our time in Venice to get you in the mood?

I want to visit England someday.  Maybe it’s the Jane Austen movies like Pride & Prejudice (miniseries and 2005 movie) or Mansfield Park (1999) that first piqued my interest.  And the period movies like Miss Potter (2006) and Sherlock Holmes (2009) were fun.  I also like the more standard fare like Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) Bridget Jones’s Diary(2001) , and Notting Hill (1999).

Monday Movie Meme – Mind Games

Feature Presentation…
MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about Mind Games…The movies love to make their characters forget. Memory loss. Hypnosis. Spells. It makes for interesting plot possibilities and entertainment for the viewers.

Here are the first five that come to mind…

1. Shattered (1991)  Tom Beringer plays a man who has amnesia after a car accident.  It’s the stuff he can’t remember that may get him killed.

2. Memento (2000)  Short term memory loss and a stockpile of post it notes make Guy Pearce’s character interesting.  And that fact that it is told in reverse makes it worth a second look just to figure out what happened!

3. Mulholland Drive (2001) Another car wreck causes amnesia and this one is a bizarre tour through Los Angeles.  Also needs a second viewing.

4. The Notebook (2004) A sappy love story that may cause a tear or two.

5. 50 First Dates (2004) Another short term memory loss sufferer is Drew Barrymore’s character.  She’s what makes it worth watching.

So, did I forget a good one?  (ha ha)

Monday Movie Meme – The Great Beyond

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week’s movie topic is all about The Afterlife…

There are movies about Heaven and Hell and demons and angels and some of them I actually like!  Here are a few favorite movies about what happens after life.

1. Dogma (1999).  Lots of angels and other Biblical characters in this irreverent take on the last descendent of Jesus.  Smart & Funny.

2. Heart & Souls (1993) Wouldn’t it be great if you could stick around until you fixed things that you left unfinished?  Hopeful.  Field of Dreams (1989) also falls into this category.

3. The Others (2001) A more stark view of what can happen after you die.  Depressing with  great ending.

Monday Movie Meme- Hated It

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about The Worst Movie You’ve Ever Seen…
Visit the Bumbles for more bed movie selections.

These three movies are generally considered classics by most, but I could not stand them.  I spent at least half of each movie complaining about how terrible it was.  I saw all of these many years ago, so I don’t know if I’d feel differently now, but I don’t plan on finding out!  Please don’t hate me if I’m disparaging a favorite of yours.

1. The English Patient (1996)  This was far too long.  I felt like Elaine in Seinfeld when she was fired because she confessed to Mr. Peterman that she hated the movie.

2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Actually thought I was going to like this one, but somehow missed the point of it and why it is considered so great.  I’m sure one of you will tell me.  Please, tell me!

3. Amadeus (1984) This is another one I thought was too long.  Don’t remember anything else about it.  This is the one that I might possibly see again because, while I remember hating it, I don’t really remember why.

So, what about you?  Is there a movie that you hated and everyone else loved?  Care to confess?

1.

Anthony Michael Hall in Weird Science (1985)

2. The wedding scene in Sixteen Candles (1984).  She’s not drunk, but has taken muscle relaxers.  The video is here.

3.

The wonderful Jimmy Stewart and Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story (1940)

Monday Movie Meme – Supernatural

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
Share on your blog favorite movies with those witchy, surreal, psychic or alien happenings, linking back here at The Bumbles.

Here are a few that fit the bill.  I’ve listed them in the order I like them best.  And they have something else in common besides today’s theme.  Can you guess what it is?

These aren’t my absolute favorite supernatural movies, but so many of them have shown up here week after week that I decided to mix things up.  Can you guess the common thread?   I don’t think I made it very hard!

Monday Movie Meme – Aging

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about Getting Older
Share on your blog movies about aging or being elderly, linking back here at The Bumbles.

This one was hard.  I guess as I haven’t watched many movies on aging, but here area  few I enjoyed.

1. Something’s Gotta Give (2003) I’m not always a Jack Nicholson fan, but he did win me over with this one.  And I always like watching Diane Keaton on the big screen.

2. The Bucket List (2007) That Jack Nicholson film made me think of this one with Morgan Freeman.  What’s on your bucket list?

3. Terms of Endearment (1983) And that Jack Nicholson movie made me think of this one.  I was only 12 when I saw it for the first time and I cried buckets.

4. Two for the Road (1967) Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney are a married couple and the movie covers their 12 year marriage.

5. The Rocky series (1976, 1979, 1982, 1985, 1990, 2006)  Taken as a whole these six movies starring Sylvester Stallone show how the boxer aged.  The last one, Rocky Balboa, was especially poignant as he faced the choices he made in his life.

Monday Movie Meme – Best Biopics

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about Biopics…
There are lots of movies these days that tell the stories about the lives of real people. We prefer the sweeping tales of a person’s life story as opposed to snapshots of moments in their time. Sometimes the films feature people we’re already familiar with and other times they introduce us to them. Either way, we had a hard time coming up with biopics featuring women – maybe you can rectify that in your post.
Visit the Bumbles for more biopic choices.

Biopics aren’t my favorite type of movie.  I think it’s because I’m always wondering what is real and what got added just for the movie.  But here are a few that I enjoyed…

1. Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line (2005)
2. Katherine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine and King Henry II in The Lion in Winter (1965)
3. James Cagney as George M. Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942)
4. Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes in The Aviator (2004)
5. Mel Gibson as William Wallace in Braveheart (1995) (I know great artistic license was taken with this one, but I loved it)

What about you?  Do you have a favorite biopic film?
