“George is a drunk,” Sanders said.  “Every day that he works, he stops at the liquor store and picks up a fifth and he takes it home and drinks it.  He’s trying to drink himself to death.  He did that last night.  He was in no shape to ambush anybody.”

“Any particular reason he’s doing that?” Virgil asked.

“Not as far as I know.  I think he’s tired of being here,” Sanders said.

But as attractive as it is, I’ve never gotten over the feeling that architecturally it belongs in another city, that it was picked up from someplace like downtown Houston or Phoenix and dropped into the middle of Cleveland.  It certainly clashes with the gothic grandeur of the gray arches and heaven-reaching green spire of the Cathedral of St. John a block away on Superior.

The Republican convention is starting, and the people who run the party down at the street level are here, as delegates and spectators.  So these big lobby guys come in with suitcases full of cash, and pass it out, expense money.  Everybody knows about it, nobody tells.  Can’t tell, cause it’s illegal.

Wicked Prey by John Sandford, chapter 1

This is the latest Lucas Davenport thriller, number 19.  Oh, and although this teaser is about Republicans, it is an equal opportunity book, also calling out the Democrats.

I’m just starting this book today, so I have no idea what is going on.  I will be interviewing the author, Mary Doria Russell, when I’m done.  The interview will be be posted this Friday or next.

This is from the novel Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell and it takes place at the 1921 Cairo Peace Conference, where world leaders have met to decide the fate of the Arab world.  It looks to be fascinating.

I told myself, as I watched the beating, that it was all too fast, that I was just dazed, and there was no time to react.  What we call cowardice is often just another name for being taken by surprise, and courage is seldom any better than simply being well prepared.
