Weekends with Gage-He’s Back!

After a few months off Gage has decided that he would like to participate in mommy’s bookish blog again.  So on Saturdays or Sundays we’re going to focus on a favorite book, show a book activity we tried, or review a book that someone sent to us.  Hope you enjoy seeing the little guy on here again.  Can you believe he’s over two and a half already?!

blueberriesBlueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey was published in 1948 and is illustrated with line drawings.  Age range is 2 1/2-5 years old. 55 pages.

Sal goes to Bluberry Hill to pick blueberries with her mother.  Little Bear comes to the same hill with her mother to fatten up for winter. The two little ones take breaks to eat berries and they lose their moms. When they go looking they get all mixed up, but luckily, the moms save the day and all ends well.

Gage loves bright colors and shorter, more action-type books, so imagine my surprise when he sat through this whole book, completely engaged.  This morning we ate blueberries and blueberry bread outside while we read it.

IMG_1951IMG_1957It really isn’t until Little Bear and Big Bear, as Gage likes to call the mom, enter the story that Gage gets excited.  If we go too many pages without seeing the bears he is ready to start flipping to find them!  I picked this up at the library for one of my quizzes a while back not thinking he would look past the first few pages, but we’ve read it through at least a dozen times and this is what he thinks…

IMG_1963This oldie but goodie earns a big smile from Gage. (I’ll have to remember to brush his hair for next week :))

So when’s the last time you ate blueberries?

O is for Open This Little Book

Blogging from A-Z

IMG_1177Open This Little Book by Jesse Klausmeier and illustrated by Suzy Lee.

When I read Kathy’s review (BermudaOnion’s Weblog) of this book I was intrigued by how clever it looked, but wondered if it would be too old for my almost two and a half year old son.  Kathy was sweet enough to mail it to Gage so we could find out.  She is a very generous book blogger and if you are not reading her blog you should be.  Thanks, Kathy 🙂

IMG_1167This is a book within a book within a book…I wasn’t sure Gage would ‘get’ the concept.  The first time I tried to read it he lasted about 3 seconds before he closed the book and said ‘”don’t like it”.  I decided not to take this too seriously since this has been his phrase of choice for the last week or so.  So, last night before bed we tried again and he flipped through the book forward and then backward.  Now that we’ve gotten him to ‘like’ it I know that we will have more fun with it.

This book is the argument for traditional publishing.  The pages must be touched  and flipped to really experience the unique aspect of the story.  It’s very visual.  Not only is it the story of a ladybug, a frog, a rabbit, a bear, and a giant, it is also a tool to teach small ones about sizes and colors.  Gage does know his colors but sizes  are something we’re working on so this will be great for that.  I love the concept and the physical appeal of this novel kid’s book.  I do think it will be best loved by 3+.

G is for Gage Going Gluten-free

Blogging from A-Z

Gage has always had tummy problems.  We know he’s allergic to milk and we know he outgrew his peanut allergy (he still will not eat peanuts or peanut butter!), but he does still have tummy issues.  So for the last two months he has been gluten-free.  I was worried that we might not find enough that he was willing to eat.  Seriously, when you take away dairy and wheat, your options are limited.  Add in a 2 year-old pickiness and it is a recipe for disaster.  We have found things he will eat, but he has a fairly limited menu.  He eats soy cheese, soy yogurt, and soy milk, gluten-free bread, fries, vegetable soup, corn pasta, mama’s homemade pizzas, chicken apple sausage and most fruits.  Oh, and cookies and raisins.  There are even two gluten/milk free cereals he will eat.

His stomach issues have maybe gotten a little better, but his language has improved so much.  He is still too young to tell us if his stomach feels better so we have to go on his behavior and that has improved.  So, much to my disappointment we have decided to keep him on it for a while longer and see.  It can take up to a year for your body to heal itself from a gluten intolerance.  Why am I disappointed?  It is a pain to go gluten and dairy free.  It is expensive and very difficult to eat out (with a 2-year-old who only wants fries and chicken).  I make a few things myself, but the more complicated the recipe, the less likely he is to eat it.

Do you have any gluten-free tips, recipes or restaurants for me?  I’m open to suggestions since we are in this for a while longer.  And since I like any excuse to post a photo of  Gage, here he is with his grandparents.  This weekend he was doted on while Jason and I snuck away for the night.  It was Jason’s birthday and we went to a mystery dinner at a haunted manor so I’ll also include a photo of that.

Happy Easter Eggs :)

Yesterday we tried the extra cool Easter eggs we found on Pinterest here.  We only had the pictures for directions so here’s how we did it.

005Gage helped Grandma crack the hardboiled eggs.

007We added food coloring into the cracks and let them dry in the frig overnight.

010Then Gage helped peel of the shells (since he only did one and ran away I didn’t get a picture).  We skipped one step in the directions, rinsing off the shells, and wonder if it would have prevented the color from going all the way to the yolk.  Gage licked one and I ate the yellow one and it was delicious 🙂

Happy Easter everyone!

Saturday Snapshot – Gage before and after

Yes, it was only 30 degrees outside but the sun made me think we could finally come out of hibernation. Gage was excited to swing, but shivered the whole time so it was a short trip. As you can tell from the second photo he thought we cut it too short.  Bring on spring already!

Gage reads Pansy at the Palace by Cynthia Bardes

009Pansy at the Palace-A Beverly Hills Mystery, written by Cynthia Barnes and illustrated by Kim Weissenborn was sent to us by the publicist.

Pansy’s life blossoms when she is adopted from an animal shelter by a loving family and little girl named Avery. Swept into her new life at the Palace Hotel in Beverly Hills, this smart and courageous puppy saves the day by solving a mysterious theft. Pansy at the Palace celebrates the spirit of curiosity and exploration, and teaches us that no one is too small to make a difference in the lives of many!

32 pages casebound with jacket, full color published by Octobre Press (from PansyAtThePalace.com)

We went out to Buffalo Wild Wings (a great chain restaurant that does an excellent job with an allergy-free menu) last night and took Pansy with us.  Gage was less enamored with the book than I was only because I think it is just out of his age level at 2 and as much as I loved the illustrations he sometimes found them too busy, probably because it was just out of his range.  He did like the simpler illustrations and there was about the right amount of reading on the each page for him, so I can see us trying this agin in a month or two and having it be more fun for him.

Here’s what I loved.  The book itself is wonderfully done.  Hardcover with great dust jacket and the pages are thick with beautiful, colorful illustrations.

The story itself of a dog being rescued from a shelter is perfect for kids.  I think if you are going to go to a shelter to choose a dog or cat then this book would really teach your child what a great thing rescuing animals is and to feel great about having a rescue at home.  And what dog doesn’t want to be rescued and taken to live in luxury hotel in Beverly Hills?  It doesn’t hurt that Pansy is adorable and smart.

And there is a mystery involving stolen jewelry, so if you want to turn your young one into a mystery lover than this is a great place start.  I loved it.

Pansy at the PalaceFun fact whenever I see Beverly Hills in a book I always fondly remember the one day I worked there many moons ago.  I made cold calls to businesses to try to get them to buy office supplies.  Every girl who was working there had to say that her name was Linda Black so that when you transferred them for the sale the manager didn’t have to think about who to say.  I had to take 2 buses to get there and then I had to say I was Linda Black all day long.  I didn’t go back for day two.  I’m glad that it worked out better for Pansy 🙂

It’s Sunday and Gage is here to choose winners!

Thank you all for your best wishes on my blogiversary.  Let’s get to some winners… First up, winner of the free book from my favorites list.  I taped everyone on a ball and let Gage choose one.

013014And the winner is…Sheree!  She said she wanted to win Violets of March, but a girl has a right to change her mind.

I had you help me choose the best Gage photo from his years on the blog.  The majority of you chose the one with him and his momma on their birthday hats.  Great choice 🙂  Gage helped me pick the winner of a surprise bookish gift.  This time I gave him some Sesame Street stickers and waited to see who’d get stuck first.

006012On his third sticker Big Bird hit Carol (Carol’s Notebook)!  Congratulations, Carol!

2012 in review

The blog, while still having some of the same features-Tuesday Quizzes, Sundays with Gage and Monthly 5 Word Movie Reviews being the constants- also managed some book reviews 😉  I read 55 books, a new low since I began blogging 5 years ago.

Here are the books by the numbers-

43 Fiction, 12 Non-Fiction (that’s a high percentage of non-fiction for me!)

39 women, 15 men, 1 both (let’s hear it for the gals!)

9 from a continuing series, 7 from a new series.  (of those new series books I will continue on with 6!)

Most read author? Karen E Olson with 3 when I finished up her Tattoo Shop series.

The 3 Rounds of Quizzes this year were exciting!  Nise (Under the Boardwalk) took the first two rounds and Hannah (Word Lily) was the winner of the last round.  I hope that you all will jump in when the new season starts.  You don’t have to win to get a prize.  Marie (Boston Bibliophile), Staci (Life in the Thumb), and Carol M all won special prizes just for playing.  If you want to browse through old quizzes click here.

Gage has been a big part of the blog this year.  If you want to look through all his posts for what you may have missed click here.  Here are the first and last photos of 2012.

The year I’ve watched 49 new-to-me movies, reviewed 3 from my Top 100 list, wrote 3 book vs. movies posts, and even had a few Friday Movie Talks.  My monthly 5 word movie reviews are tied to money for charity.  You still have a few hours (until 7om EST) to get your reviews in to be counted for charity.  $1 for every 5 word review you contribute.  I already told you about my favorite movies, what about a few stats?

Surprisingly, I watched more movies released in 2012 (19) than in any other.  Surprising because I consider myself a classic movie lover!

The oldest movie I watched was War and Peace released in 1956.

My most viewed actor- Denzel Washington, 3 movies

Most viewed actress- Helena Bonham Carter, 4 movies (weird since this woman really bothers me)

2012 has been a good year and I’m happy the Mayans were wrong and there is the possibility of 2013 being better than all the other years before it.  I wish that for all of us.

Sundays with Gage & My favorite books and movies of 2012

015This has been a fun year with Gage.  I think the year and a half range is my favorite age 🙂  Now that he’s 2 plus a few Gage’s role on the blog will be changing in 2013.  He’ll still be here, doing some book reviews, special events, showing up in Saturday Snapshots, and just to say hi.  He won’t be a stranger, but Sundays with Gage will be a thing of the past.  I hate to do it because Gage is much more popular that most of my book reviews, but it will be nice not to have the pressure of writing a post every Sunday.  If you truly need a consistent Gage update I would be happy to be friends on Facebook where I will be updating more.  Thank you all so much for your loving and kind words about my kid, I think he’s wonderful too 🙂  And expect to see him in the next week or so reviewing a very awesome book about a dog.  And he might be giving something away too.  See, he’ll be taking a more grown-up role around here!

As you can see, Gage refused to give me a smile when he realized this was his last Sundays with Gage.

This has been a very slow reading year for me, so I’m going to do a top 5 list instead of 10 for my favorite movies and books.  Let me know if you’ve read any of them!

Top 5 Books

BelovedBeloved by Toni Morrison. Part of my Ohio tour and I am looking forward to reading more from this universally beloved author.

The Violets of MarchThe Violets of March by Sarah Jio.  The book was as great that sweet cover.

In the Woods (Dublin Murder Squad Series #1)In the Woods by Tana French.  So glad that this was the last book I read this year.  Ended on a high note!

ItIt by Stephen King. Loved taking part in my first read-along.  The It-a-long rocked!

Stories I Only Tell My FriendsStories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe.  I can only vouch for the audio read by Lowe himself.  I was charmed by it.

Favorite 5 Movies of 2012

The Hunger Games, 2012.  I have not read the books but loved the movie.

Looper, 2012. Loved this time-travel thriller.  I think I have a crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The Hobbit:An Unexpected Journey, 2012.  It’s so nice to go back to Middle Earth, disappointed it’s going to be one of three Hobbit movies.

The Secret Life of Bees, 2008.  Loved the book and the movie, a rarity.

It’s Complicated, 2009.  I love Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin and this movie delivered.
