R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril VI

I need another challenge like I need another 10 month old, but here I am, admitting I joined just one more.  I’ve seen this one around every year and always meant to participate, but never got around to it, so this year in a moment of weakness I joined it.  I think it’ll be fun.

Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings is hosting.  Here are a few of the details if you are interested too.

The purpose of the R.I.P. Challenge is to enjoy books that could be classified as:

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

The emphasis is never on the word challenge, instead it is about coming together as a community and embracing the autumnal mood, whether the weather is cooperative where you live or not.

I signed up to read two books before the end of October.   Let me know if there is one that I just have to read.

Mid Year Update

So, having a baby in the house kinda cuts into your reading time!  This year I thought I signed up for challenges in a conservative fashion, but we’ll see as we take a lot at what I’ve accomplished.

Yes, this is a 2010 challenge that I am determined to finish this year because it’s the one where all of you voted for what I would read from my stacks of books.

Goal 14  Read so far  5   Since this is the one that I most want to finish I need to get busy.

Book ObsessedI knew this would be the one challenge that would be a long shot but I wanted to try it anyway.

Goal 51 Read so far 16    That’s worse than I thought I was doing.

I’m fairly good about giving away my books so I thought this one was a no brainer.

Goal 12  So far I’ve given away 5 that I reviewed this year, but 2 more will be offered on Saturday.

I wanted to get back to reading more fluff but haven’t read too many.  Maybe it’s because I haven’t discovered a new romance author that I love lately.

Goal 12  Read so far 5

One down, still over 100 to go 🙂  Good thing there’s no time limit on this one!

This one starts on July 1st, so I’m not behind yet!  Woo Hoo 🙂

My favorite book so far has been Good Grief by Lolly Winston.

My favorite movie so far this year is Bridemaids.

A Classic Summer

My friend Molly of both The Bumbles Blog and Quirky Girls Read is hosting a challenge.  And since Molly is fun, creative and just all around great, I thought I would join in and invite you to do the same.

She couldn’t have made the challenge any easier.  Read a classic book before Labor Day, review it (linking to Molly’s challenge post) and add your post to Mr. Linky.  And you can enter as many classics as you want!

Did I mention she’s giving out an Amazon gift card?  You should probably head over there and check it out for yourself!

The Classic Bribe

I am currently reading A Room with a View by Forster (and loving it) and hope to get Emma by Austen in this summer too.  I also need to read Roots and Mists of Avalon.  What about you?  Is there a classic that you’d like to read this summer and this challenge is just the thing to give you a gentle push?

2011 Challenges

This is a continuation of last year’s challenge where I asked all of you to vote for 50 books from my shelves that I would read.  I have 14 left and I’m honoring my committment to reading them.  Maybe it’s because you guys chose 4 of my 5 favorite books last year!  Here are the ones I’ve still yet to read…

1. She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb – 12 votes (Mary, Marce, Jo-Jo, Amanda, Calico Critic, ‘Nise, Jo Ann, Allesandra, Piroska, Mom, Literary Feline, Melissa)

2. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving – 10 votes (Mary, BermudaOnion, Word Lily, Linda B, Em, Literate Housewife, Ms. Mazzola, Jessica, Mille, Margie)

4. Life of Pi by Yann Martel – 10 votes (Gofita, Carol, Staci, Ms. Mazzola, Heather, Kerri, Rebecca, Alita Reads, Julie H., Rhapsody)

9. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley – 7 votes (Carol, Staci, FleurFisher, Vasilly, Ms. Mazzola, Angie, Amanda)

11. Emma by Jane Austen – 6 votes (Candice, Jennifer, Ms. Mazzola, Alita Reads, Kathrin, Literary Feline)

14. Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire – 5 votes (Shanyn, Jo-Jo, Calico Critic, Donna S, Lisa-Marie)

19. Roots by Alex Hailey – 5 votes (Cee-Cee, Staci, Literate Housewife, Sarah E., Angie S.)

35. Good Grief by Lolly Winston – 3 votes (Staci, Jenners, Margie)

36. Testimony by Anita Shreve – 3 votes (Marce, Allesandra, Mystica)

40. Three Junes by Julia Glass – 2 votes (Golda, Soft Drink)

42. Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins – 2 votes (Carol, Mille)

46. Bel Canto by Ann Patchett – 2 votes (Golda, Heather)

49. The Human Stain by Philip Roth – 2 votes (Jackie, Mille)

50. A Room With a View by E.M. Forster – 2 votes (Candice, Jenny girl)

Book ObsessedTasha is hosting this challenge.  I’m hoping I even get 50 books read this year, but I’m going to give this one a shot.  I’ll try to read at least one book from each of the 50 states.  Last year I visited 23 so we’ll see if I can improve on that.

The goal of this challenge is to read books that are set in each of the fifty states. Your books can be of any genre and any format (ie. paperback, ebook, audiobook, etc.). No short stories. Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are fine. (Re-read reviews must be written within the year 2011; you can not use old reviews.)

This one hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea looks like fun and it should fit it with my monthly giveaways.  I’m signing up for 12.

Here are the details if you are interested:

  • Challenge runs from January 1 – December 31, 2011.
  • Read books from your own shelves, and then pass the books on to someone else: a friend, relative, the library, used book store, swap them, just as long as the book leaves your house once it has been read.
  • Decide on your goal (12 is the minimum – no maximum). Cross over books are allowed.
  • Grab the button and do a post about the challenge.
  • Keep a running list of the books you’ve read and passed on.
  •  Leave a comment with a link to your post and you are entered  (no Mr. Linky).
  • Have Fun and GOOD LUCK!

And this one hosted by Jamie at Nitty Gritty.  I grew up on romances and since I have started my blog I feel like I have largely abandoned them so I’m signing up with a goal of 12.

1. Create a post for the challenge using the image above and link back to this post.
–Non-Bloggers: You are welcome to join too. Post your list of books in the comment section of the wrap-up post.
2. Sign up with the Mr. Linky.
–Link to your challenge post when you sign up please.
3. The goal of this challenge is to read AT LEAST 12 novels that are in the Romance genre (ANY kind of romance) between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011. Books read before January 1, 2011 do NOT count towards the challenge.
4. Audio, eBooks, paper all count. Re-reads are ok but try to keep them to a minimum. Cross overs from other challenges are ok.
5. There is no need to create your list now. Please feel free to use your challenge post to keep track of your titles if you so desire.

I’m blaming this one on Margot (her posts always made me want to join in), but it’s hosted by Kerrie  at Mysteries in Paradise.  I’m signing up to read my way through Agatha Christie’s novels in order.  This challenge has no time limit, which is why I’m signing up.  Since there are around 100 works I may be at it awhile!

2010 Challenge Wrap Up

I love participating in challenges.  They help me focus and try books and authors I wouldn’t have otherwise.  In 2009 I completed all 4 of my challenges.  This year?  Not so much.  Having many months of morning sickness and then the arrival of little Gage 10 weeks ago have forced me to prioritize and I’m okay with that.

I only completed one challenge this year – The New Authors challenge where I committed to read 35 new to me authors.  My favorite is Beth Hoffman, author of Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt, because not only did I love her debut novel, but she is a super nice person, an inspiring speaker and she actually interacts with the book blogging community.  Three cheers for Beth.

I failed the A-Z Challenge this year and plan to try again in 2011.  I also failed The RYOB Challenge where I had you all vote for 50 of the books I’d read this year.  I have 14 left and will be reading them in 2011.  You guys really picked some winners for me, you chose 4 of my top 5 reads this year!  I failed the States challenge and Color challenge and will try again in 2011.  I also failed the Short Story  and 100 mile fitness challenges.

I’ll be a bit choosier in my 2011 challenges.  Unless I can start counting board and cloth books 🙂

My first challenge FAIL

Last year I signed up for only a few challenge and managed to complete them all.  Why sign up if you aren’t planning on succeeding?  Well, I was humbled by the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge that ran from January 1-March 31.  I got off to a slow start and due to a few challenges at home (which I will share with you next week) I came in at only about 75 miles.  Big fat fail.  So I decided to see how I was doing with my other challenges and promptly started to panic.

I let you guys choose 50 of the 55 books I signed up for and I need to get busy.  Of the 50 you chose for me I’ve managed to complete only 11.  I have started 3 others.  And of the 5 I chose from my shelves I’ve read 3.  So I’m 14 out of 55 for this challenge. So far my favorite book that you chose is Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen.Sign up for the 2010 A to Z ChallengeI flew through this one last year, but not so much this time around.  I have read 20 out of the 52.

New Author Challenge 2010I signed up for 35 and have read 12 new authors this year.  Just by adding the ones that you chose for me for the RYOB challenge I’ll add 17 more.  Beth Hoffman author of Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt is my favorite new find.

The Color Challenge is to read 9 books with nine different colors in the title.  I finished one this week and am reading a second.

Looking for the Short Story Challenge?I’m supposed to read a short story collection every quarter and I’m on track.  Whew.  At least I’m caught up on one.

50 states of mindThe States Challenge is one I joined late knowing that it would be difficult to complete.  Since it includes Washington DC I’ve managed only 13 of 51 so far.  New York is my most read state since I re-read the Deadly series with 8 books.

So, there it is.  My reading has really taken a hit lately, as has my visiting your blogs.  Hang in there with me, more details next week…

2010 Goals and Challenges

I’ve been blogging for two full years now and loving every minute of it.  2009 was different in that I became more involved with the book blogging community and because of it found the need to figure out how to use a Reader and to keep track of my ever-increasing Reading Wish List.  Last year I made a goal to read 130 books and did it by finishing #130 at 5pm yesterday.  I also wanted to read 30 non-fiction, but only ended the year with 19.  This was the only reading goal or challenge I failed last year 😦

In 2010 I am lowering my reading goal to 105.  I need to have a little less stress at the end of the year and I want to make time for some chunky books I want to read.  I’ll make my non-fiction goal 12.  I let you all choose 50 of the books I’ll read this year and I’m excited to see what you’ve chosen!

I do have a few other things that will be happening in 2010.  My weekly quiz will move to Tuesday mornings so that I can participate in The Bumbles Monday Movie meme more often.  I will also continue to give away books on the first or second day of each month and give my 5 word movie reviews at the end of each month.  On Fridays (except for today :)) I’ll feature a favorite movie or an author interview.  And as I was looking over old posts I found one that I’d like to continue on a monthly basis, so look out!  And I’ll be posting about 2 reviews a week.  I think that’s enough to keep me busy, don’t you?

Here are the reading challenges I’ve joined for the year.  I am looking forward to them all.  The challenges really help me focus and I need that.

New Author Challenge 2010This is my first year trying this challenge and I’m going to go for 35 new authors.  Go here for more details.

The Colorful Reading Challenge.  This is my first year, but the goal is to read 9 books with 9 different colors in the title.  I have 7 on my shelves already, so this will help me clear some shelf space too.  Click here for more details.

Sign up for the 2010 A to Z Challenge I loved this one last year and look forward to the challenge again this year.  Last year I read a few books that I never would have tried and ended up loving them, so I have high hopes for this year.  Click here for more details.

This one helped me so much last year.  I am committed to reading 55 of my own books this year.  You all voted to choose 50 of those and I’m excited to see what you’ve chosen for me.  Click here for more details.

I finished Round 1 and am signing up for Round 2.  I need to walk 100 miles by March 31st.  And I need to not leave 8 1/2 miles for the last two days!  Click here for more details.

Looking for the Short Story Challenge?I haven’t read short stories since college, but I do have a few languishing on my shelves so I’m signing up for the Bronze level and will read one short story collection a quarter for a grand total of 4.  Click here for more details.

2009 Wrap-up, part 2

Out of the 130 books I read this year (the final 2 to be reviewed in the next week) I gave only 3 a perfect 5 Star rating.  I’m picky.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie: Book CoverThe Secret Life of Bees by Kidd Monk Kidd: Book CoverCover Image

I gave out 15 4 1/2 Stars.  To make it a top ten list I’ll choose my favorite 7 from this list.

I see none of these were published in 2009, but that can’t be helped now.

I joined 5 Challenges and COMPLETED THEM ALL!!!!  Of course, I should confess I only finished the 100 Mile Challenge today at 3:30 pm after walking 4 miles on the treadmill 🙂

readown3I made a goal of 50 and reached that number in October.

I finished this one in October too.  For each letter I read a title and author.

Southern Reading Challenge BadgeI realized how little Southern fiction I read and did something about it.  I only read 3 books, but liked them all.

everythingausten2I’d never read Austen and enjoyed reading Pride & Prejudice and listening to Sense & Sensibility during this challenge.

I had 3 months to walk 100 miles.  As I’ve already confessed it came down to the wire, but I did it!

And this is a monthly challenge where I committed to reading when I could.  Of the four months, I’ve participated in 2 and look forward to more screenplays and movies in 2010.

Thanks for reading and commenting!  I appreciate each and every one of you 🙂  Have a fun and safe New Year’s Eve.
