This week’s movie topic is all about Sports…
I love sports and there would just be too many if I started listing favorites, so I’m going to pick some Olympic based movies I love. Not sure how long this list will be until I get started, so let’s go.
I love the Olympics and gymnastics are a favorite. This 1984 made for TV movie was a favorite of mine growing up.The story of Nadia Comaneci, who scored the first perfect 10. Haven’t seen it since I was a young teen, but maybe I should find it.
Another true Olympic story I loved was this one.Running Brave (1983) is the story of Billy Mills, a Sioux Indian who overcame many obstacles to run the 10,000 meter race in the 1964 Olympics. Stars Robbie Benson.
The story of four Jamaicans on a bobsled trying to make the Winter Olympics is funny and sweet. And John Candy is great.

I’m not a huge hockey fan, but the USA vs. the USSR in the Cold War? And we are David and they are Goliath? Makes you proud to be an American 🙂

And my last pick is not based on any real Olympic event, but I’ve seen it many times (just today I watched 30 minutes when I found it on tv). Figure skating is always fun to watch, but I also enjoyed the sparks that flew between these two. Sad, but true.
There you have it. These are not the best sports movies ever filmed, but they are my favorite Olympics movies. Did I miss a good one? Why not visit the Bumbles and see everyone else’s sports picks?

Hi Stacy! I was at Sandy’s and told her that I need to work on watching more movies this year. I haven’t watched any of the ones you listed here…
Hi Stacy! I’m not sure if I watched the movie Nadia, but I sure kept my eye on the TV screen when the real thing was playing out! I was so in love with gymnastics then and who couldn’t root for the little Romanian girl! I’ve lost interest in the sport over the years. Now they just seem like little robots to me, but I still watch occasionally.
I am not and have never been a hockey fan, but I was glued to the TV during the whole Olympics when Miracle took place. I remember exactly the feeling of that victory! It was awesome!
Susan, I’m just guessing here, but I’m thinking that the real thing may have been better that the movies 🙂
Oh…I forgot about the movie Nadia. Excellent choice. We had two others in common this week. See my list
nadia and cool runnings, loved them both. good choices this week.
I’ve never seen Nadia, although I’m not surprised the movie was made. I remember the sensation she caused during the Olympics. I enjoyed your list!
Toepick!
I think I remember that Nadia one – the cover looks really familiar. I am an Olympic freak so I have little doubt that I watched it!
One of my favorites is Chariots of Fire. However now I will have the theme music in my head all evening.
Yeah, those are some great ones! I forgot about the Cutting Edge! I love that movie.
Nadia ~ I remember the movie but being 11-y’s.o. in ’76 and watching a tiny 14-y.o. Nadia capture the heart of millions as she scored her 7 perfect tens in Montreal was magical!
The Cutting Edge ~ wouldn’t even hazard a guess as to how many times I’ve seen that one! Did you catch D.B. Sweeney’s guest appearance on House?
