Sundays with Gage – Mom who?

I wanted to participate in the Read-a-thon but couldn’t really ask Jason to do 24 + 6 (recovery sleep time) hours of dad duty so I suggested to my mom that she and my dad might like to come and help out for the weekend and being the awesome grandparents they are, they came.  Gage was having so much fun that he did not even notice that I was taking the day off.

Jason was never that comfortable with me doing Sundays with Gage and I told him that I would only do it til Gage turned one.  But I’ve heard from so many of you via blog, Facebook, and email that you would like it to continue.  So, I’ve been thinking about it and decided that I’ll continue to feature Gage on the weekends in someway.  Maybe Weekends with Gage?  I’ll try to be little more focused.  Once a month I can do a weekend with books, one with a special baby or mommy issue, one with a special trip we’ve taken, and the last one is open right now.  So, Gage will continue to show his cute face for a while longer, maybe til his next birthday?  I don’t know.  I like having the weekly update.  I’ve been better about documenting firsts here than anywhere else.

Also, I haven’t really addressed his health scare from February (post here).  We weren’t convinced that it wasn’t formula related in some way and have had him on soy  formula since and we have been extremely (too) careful in introducing foods.  In July he spent another night in the hospital after I fed him a cracker with cheese and milk.  So, that’s where we are.  We are not feeding him dairy even though his allergy test was negative.  He has been the picture of health otherwise and I’m hoping that week in February will be the scariest week of his childhood!

Gage’s 1st Birthday Winners!

Gage had a fun first birthday.  We went to a daycare for a few hours to hang out (Gage will not be attending-too crazy there), went to the flower shop, library, grocery store and then to visit a neighbor.  In between activities we had lots of phone calls and a few naps 🙂  Not a bad birthday, right?

Sundays with Gage- When Organic Matters

I read this post by Constance Marie when we were starting to plan for Gage’s arrival and wanted to do as much organically as possible.  The no VOC paint was the easiest thing to do.  It dried fast and there were not fumes.  I also became convinced that an organic crib was the way to go, but when I started researching them they were expensive.  Jason and I went back and forth on whether to invest in an Amish organic crib and in the end we bought it.  Kids Collection uses organic wood and stain (if you pay more) so that no chemicals will come near your baby when they sleep. Or in Gage’s case, come near his teeth!  This is what Gage works on when mom and dad are sleeping.

Do you see those teeth marks?!

I also signed up for Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-Thon next weekend. I’ve asked my parents to come up and help with Gage for the weekend.  I’d like to see if I can make it the whole 24 hours.  As a newish mom I can get by on a lot less sleep now, but I know I’ll miss that afternoon nap!  If you haven’t already signed up you should. Here’s the link.  I’m sure some of that time will be spent reading to Gage so that he can participate too 🙂

Sundays with Gage – An early celebration

A few months ago Jason and I stayed at The Inn in Dresden for a night.  Since it was only 30 minutes from my parent’s house we had babysitters!  This is was Dave Longaberger’s old house (the man who started Longaberger baskets) and it has 10 rooms and 10,000 sq.ft. of deck space.  Yes, 10,000 sq.ft of outdoor space. The house itself is so charming with lots of great rooms and indoor space and the food is excellent.  If you like B&B’s I recommend this one, here’s the link to the site.

While we were there in August we asked to see all of the rooms and realized that the inn would be perfect for a joint birthday celebration.  So, we booked the whole place and invited family and a few friends to come and party the day and night away with us.  We had guests from Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan in addition to the Ohioans.  We had 36 people plus Gage who ate cake, enjoyed a dinner from the grill, played games, and drank.  And 25 people spent the night and enjoyed yummy breakfast before heading home.

Gage and I got way too many gifts, but we love every one of them!  Jason booked me a day at the spa on my birthday and gave me signed first editions of  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Outlander.  Isn’t he wonderful?  My birthday is still a few days away and Gage’s isn’t for over a week, but it was the only weekend we could rent the whole place and we took it.  I am grateful that so many people could come and spend time with us.  I am tired , but happy and refreshed after such a perfect weekend.

I’d like to say we have lots of great photos, but we don’t.  Here is the most important one, Gage with his Elmo cake (and the little dairy free cake that I made that he could eat).  My cousin, Amy, made the cake, isn’t it fantastic?

Sundays with Gage- Motherhood *with giveaway

Motherhood has not been what I thought it would be.  I didn’t even have that many expectations, so that’s surprising.  In honor of my 40 years here are the 40 Best & Worst things about being a mom.

The Best

1. That first smile greeting me in the morning is my favorite one.

2. But the rest of them are pretty good too.

3. Baby toes are the best.

4. Little fingers gripping mine.

5. Seeing myself and Jason in him.

6. Grandparent visits.

7. Naps!

8. Watching Gage chase Max.  Poor Max.

9. Bedtime kisses.

10. Clean bill of health doctor visits.

11. Knowing that after 28+ hours of labor I can pretty much do anything.

12. Hearing Gage say mama (even though he has yet to actually say it to me).

13. Watching Gage learn new things.

14. Dancing with my little man.

15. Hearing Gage laugh with Jason.

16. When he falls asleep in the car seat.

17. Watching Gage brighten people’s day when he chats them up as we’re out running errands.

18. Seeing that Gage loves books and reading to him when he takes the book out of his mouth long enough.

19. Having a closer relationship with my mom.

20. I’m not nearly so concerned with my own crap anymore.

21. Sleeping all night with no interruptions.  This does happen sometimes.

22. Saturday mornings when Jason takes over and I get to sleep in.

23. As a genealogy nut it’s nice to see another branch added to the family tree.

24. The pressure of having a perfect body has melted away (as the pounds have packed on).

25. Being able to stay at home with Gage is a blessing (but I still need mom mental health days)

26. Gage hugs.

27. Showing him new things.

28. Listening to his nonsense babble.

29. Having the best baby-rearing partner in Jason.  He’s an awesome dad.

30. Knowing that the 1st year is hardest and it will get easier (if I am wrong on this, please don’t tell me!)

31. Buying baby clothes, even for boys, is more fun that I thought it would be.

32. Taking Gage to My Gym and library storytimes are fun for both of us.

33. Finally!  Someone who likes my singing.

34. The love.

The Worst

35. A baby really cuts into reading time, LOL!

36. The constant need to change my clothes and his.

37. The knowledge that most of what’s happening is really out of your control.

38.  There are no sick days for mom.

39. Those cute teeth are sharp and he’s not afraid to use them! (He’s up to 8 teeth :))

40. Feeling like a big failure at least once a day.

I’m 5 1/2 here and have the 1970’s hair flip (think Charlie’s Angels) and denim outfit going on.

Sundays with Gage -Walking with Grandpa

Last week I wrote a post patting myself on the back for having completed the 100 Mile Challenge. That was nothing.   Yesterday, Gage was able to participate in a Grandpa milestone.

My dad had a heart attack and bypass surgery when he was 37.  That’s two years younger than I am now.  I’m not sure he changed much about his lifestyle, still smoked and ate the same stuff, until he was 53.  Then he decided to quit smoking and his doctor said he’d have to keep himself busy.  Well, he did.  In May of 2000 he walked 34 miles and on September 24th he completed his 30,000th mile.  He only remembers about 4 days in those years where he didn’t walk at all, when he had stents put in his heart years ago. I don’t know how many tennis shoes, socks or umbrellas he’s gone through, but let’s just say a lot.

If we do the math that means he averaged over 221 miles per month for 136 months straight.

Gage ‘s Grandpa showed him that it’s never too late to take charge of your health and that completing a goal is often as easy as having a streak of stubbornness.  My dad walked the first half of the momentous mile with my cousin Bill and then drove up here so he could finish the mile with Gage.  Someday soon Gage will be able to take walks with his Grandpa where I’m sure lots of grandfatherly wisdom will be passed on.  He is lucky to have such a great grandfather.

Sundays with Gage- Privacy

I remember a friend telling me when I first told her I was pregnant that I would get used to the uncomfortable doctor visits and by the time the baby arrived that I would have no shame and wouldn’t care who was looking or poking and prodding or where.  She was mostly right.  And I know that last illusion of privacy, the bathroom, is one that I will probably not get to appreciate again for many years.  But, if someone were to watch me sleep I am sure I would be appalled.  I am a light sleeper, which is great now that Gage is here.  I am never still for very long (I’m guessing) and I  know I snore occasionally (yuck).

Now that we’ve started watching Gage’s video monitor like it’s reality tv I feel a little guilty.  When he wasn’t moving around much it was great to see that he was okay, but now that he’s moving around more I see that he sleeps a lot like his mother. Poor kid. But he’s also bendy like his dad, yay 🙂   A few shots will show you just how much fun it can be to watch him from the comfort of your own bed.  These were taken over the course of one night.

Do you think he’s got the camera figured out?  The video monitor is a wonderful thing for parents but I’ve also come to rely on it and feel nervous when I can’t see him.  What did you all do before monitors?  I think sometimes that I might get a better night’s sleep!

Sundays with Gage- Wet

We spent the week on Kelley’s Island with Gage’s babysitters, um, I mean, grandparents.  This is a small island on Lake Erie that we visit every few years.  I love it because it is so small that you can walk everywhere you need to go and it’s quaint in a good way.  We always go in September after all the drunks have cleared out.  It rained.  A lot.

We spent lots of time inside due to the rain, but still managed to have a great time.

I apologize for the funky formatting.  Whenever I try anything else it deletes the photos!

Kid Konnection – September 11th

A Gift Of Loveby Dr. Claus.  Illustrated by Christopher Vassallo.  30 page paperback.  First published in 2001.

I saw somewhere recently that 97% of Americans remember where they were on September 11, 2001.  I am one of them.  For some reason I was watching the Today Show (it was not normal for me to be up at that hour!) and they were talking about the first plane, still thinking it had been a horrible accident.  But when the second plane hit confusion reigned there and on all the other channels.  I was glued to the television that day and most every day for a few weeks time.  I love New York City.  Jason and I had enjoyed almost 5 months living in midtown just the year before.  On that day I opened my photo album to the page of pictures I took from the top of the World Trade Center in September 2000 and had a hard time coming to terms with the terror that the people who were there must have felt when they realized that being rescued probably wasn’t going to happen.

I am sure that one day I will share the chaos of that day with Gage and A Gift of Love by Dr. Claus is a good starting point.  A young girl is about to start her first day of second grade and she shares the excitement of the morning with her mom and dad, a New York firefighter. The story is told beautifully from her perspective, as she is sent home early from school and her mother tells her what had happened to her dad.  I was completely touched by it.

Dr. Claus is an Iraq veteran and he also has a personal story that is included in the book that will remind us all to thank soldiers, veterans, and those that protect us on our own streets for their service to us and to this country.  Our lives are richer because of their committment and sacrifice.  You can visit his website for more information and to order a copy for yourself.

I admit that as much as I loved the story I was less than excited by the illustrations, but Gage seemed to like them 🙂

Sundays with Gage-Milestones

When you are a brand new parent you look at those parenting guides like the law.  They tell you when your baby is supposed to do this or do that and are supposed to be helpful.  Well, they are, at least until your perfect baby is late for one.  Then panic ensues and your husband has to listen to you obsess over every little thing.  And at only a month or two old there isn’t a lot going on so it is easy to put unnecessary pressure on yourself and your baby.

Milestones are important.  At the beginning of each new month I look at the What to Expect book and the Baby 411 book for new tricks Gage should be learning, but I don’t obsess anymore.  Those first three months I drove myself and Jason crazy.  Some milestones he was early for (raising his head, bearing weight on his legs), some he was right on time (sitting up), and others he was late for (smiling).  But somehow if you wait a month or two you’ll find that your baby will do things on his own time.  As my pediatrician told me, “the baby doesn’t read those books.”

All of the obsessing doesn’t make it happen any faster and you lose happy time just enjoying your baby.  Having said all that Gage did reach a very important and scary milestone this week.  He is crawling!  All others to this point pale in comparison to this life changer.  He is fast and I’ll admit that we are a little late in baby proofing the house.  It’s so much fun to watch him cruise around on his own.  See?

But with this freedom comes stressful moments like these…

He falls down.  A lot.  But at least not off this step so far 🙂  Welcome to the crazy train.  I’ve had a lot less time at the computer this week for very good reason !

Thanks for all of the advice on the napping last week.  I confess I have not been very successful this week, but I’m okay with that.
