Have you seen…Giveaway

The Day the World Ends: PoemsEthan Coen’s new book of poems, The Day the World Ends?  It was released last week and I have a copy to give away.  I was offered the book for review, but honestly, I just don’t think I’d do it justice.  I am not a poetry lover.

Synopsis From one of the most inventive and celebrated filmmakers of the twentieth century, and co-creator of such classics as Fargo, No Country for Old Men, and True Grit, a collection of poems that offers humor and insight into an artist who has always pushed the boundaries of his craft. Ethan Coen’s screenplays have surprised and delighted international audiences with their hilarious vision and bizarrely profound understanding of human nature. This eccentric genius is revealed again in The Day the World Ends, a remarkable range of poems that are as funny, ribald, provocative, raw, and often touching as the brilliant films that have made the Coen brothers cult legends.

But I did offer to use it in  quiz and give a copy to one lucky reader.  Why would I accept a book of poetry if I’m not a fan?  Well, he is a Coen brother who, along with his brother Joel, has written some of the best scripts.  You can thank Ethan and Joel for Raising Arizona, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, and 18 others.

Want to win a copy?  Leave a comment with an email address and then come back tomorrow to see how I used the poems for a quiz and enter again.  I’ll draw a winner on Sunday, April 15th.

March Wrap Up and a Free Book (Zagat America’s Top Restaurants 2012)

First and foremost – I didn’t win the lottery 😦  I bought my first lottery ticket ever and had a really good feeling about it, LOL.  But I’m not too upset about it because OHIO STATE IS IN THE FINAL FOUR!  For those of you not keeping track, the game is tonight at 8:45 so break out your Go Bucks cheer.  If Ohio State beats Kansas I will lose my yearly bet with Jason.  If Ohio State loses then my consolation will be that I still have a chance to win.  Oh, the irony.

My husband received a book for the holidays and I’m passing it on to one of you because as the parents of a 1 1/2  year old we are not eating out at fancy places and we are not traveling.  If you would like the brand new copy of Zagat’s America’s Top Restaurants 2012 just leave a comment with your email address on this post and I’ll draw a name at the end of the month.

So, I only read 5 books and am feeling like I’m in a bit of a reading slump right now. They never seem to last long which is a good thing since this is a bookish blog!  I’ve also been in a slump as far as accomplishing my goals.  I’ll post them only because I want to keep track, but if I were you I’d just skip right over the rest of this paragraph!  Daily goals 10,000 steps (19/31), 8 glasses of water (6/31), daily meditations (27/31), a note to Jason (8/22), One line mom diary (31/31). Weekly goals vegetarian (6/8), letter (2/4).  I didn’t keep track of my cardio this month.

So, my goal for the month is to get back on track!  And I’m adding 2 things – read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser and to give up drive-thrus for the month. I’ve always eaten fast food but since I’ve been a mother I drive thru somewhere at least once a day.  This is often the 5 minutes that I have to eat in relative peace and I need to break the habit.  I believe this and lack of sleep are the two biggest things keeping me from losing the baby weight.  I need to tape before and after photos on my dash for motivation.

The other thing on my radar this month is World Book Night on April 23.  I’ll be passing out 20 copies of The Glass Castle.

February Wrap Up and a Free Book

February was a slow reading month for me – I only finished 5 books and three of them were audio!  Thank goodness for listening time in the car.  This month I am offering one of you lucky readers a chance to win one of the books I reviewed, Half Full: Meditations on Hope, Optimism and the Things That Really Matter.  I liked this as a bright place to start my morning and will be sending off one brand new copy.  Just comment on my original post with your email and you’ll be entered.  If you’ve already commented just leave your email so I know you want to be entered.

So, the hard numbers on my daily goals are going to be brutal this month and you’ll find out why.  10,000 steps (18/28), 8 glasses of water (16/28), daily meditations (27/28), a note to Jason (9/20), One line mom diary (28/28).  I was under the weather for almost 3 weeks this month.  It was mostly sinus, but it refused to go away and I let some of these goals slide because just couldn’t make myself do it.  This also affected my secret goal for February…….I wanted to go vegetarian for the month.  I made it 9 days and when I just couldn’t shake my sickness I broke down and added meat back into my diet.  So, my last two goals were mixed- vegetarian (9/28) and a perfect month of letter writing (28/28)!  As you can see I viewed the 29th as a free day 🙂

What am I adding to my goals in March?  I am going to try to go vegetarian 2 days a week and see how that goes.  Until I have some good recipes and start planning better it will be hard to do more.  I am also setting the goal of 3 days a week of 30 minutes cardio.  Seems like so little, but I am trying carve out little bits of time for everything I want to do plus the stuff that is good for me 🙂 I’m already working on a vegetarian day today!

If you watch CNN or the like you will be sick of them talking about Ohio this week.  First, the horrible school shootings last week (the school is about 30 minutes from both Bonnie and me). And now those pesky Republican primaries.  I have never voted in a Republican primary, but they say it’s open this year so I may have to hold my judgement and vote for the candidate who least scares the crap out of me.

If you have any good vegetarian recipes to help me out I would love an email.  Keep in mind I will not let brocoli or mushrooms pass my lips and it would be an added bonus if they were dairy and peanut free so Gage could eat it too.  (do you see what a pain it is to cook meals around here?)

January Wrap Up and Free Book

I’ve decided to add a new feature to by blog and I hope you’ll like it.  It will replace my free books for the month post.  There is a free book in this post somewhere but you must read on to find it 🙂  They’ll be free book with each of these wrap-ups.

So, I bought this great planner because I decided to enter the world of the productive again instead of the “I’ve got a baby and I can’t get anything done” whine that I had been using.  I make monthly, weekly, and daily goals and I have a way to track them.  I get to check off goals and it makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something. I had 5 daily goals for the month: 10,000 steps (22/31), meditation reading (29/31), 8 glasses of water (keep in mind that I HATE water 22/31), a note to Jason (14/22), One Line Mom Diary (29/31).  I think I did okay and look forward to improving on these numbers in January.

I’ve added two more things to my daily goals for February.  One is a secret til the end of the month, but it is a true challenge and the other is this challenge…

A Month of Letters. This goes along with my bucket list goal of writing 1000 letters, so I’m going to give it a try.  Why not join in?  If I have your address don’t be surprised to find something in the mail from me this month 🙂 I want to thank Care for helping me find this one.

I have a friend named Molly, some of you may know her as the Bumble, and she has been doing a series of posts about lessons learned in Regina Brett’s book, God Never Blinks.  I have enjoyed this series and hope you are reading it too.  Regina is a local writer and has a new book titled Be the Miracle.  She will be signing books in the area this month and I plan on attending one of these events.  Would you like to win a signed copy?  Just leave me your email address in a comment.  I’ll accept entries until I attend the signing, but neither of us knows when that is so better do it now, the next signing is Sunday 🙂

Those are my thoughts for my January goals and a few of my plans for February.  Are you someone who needs a list to accomplish things, too?

Free Books for January – new rules

Every month for the past 3 years I’ve given away 3-4 books a month from my boxes/shelves and they’ve always gone to he first commenter.  This year I’m going to try something just a bit different.  If you want the book, let me know by a comment and at midnight tonight if more than one person wants the same book I’ll draw a name out of a hat.

After a day, it’s first come, first booked!

1 & 2 Cherry Ames, The Mystery of Rogue’s Cave & The Case of the Forgetful Patient by Helen Wells.  These mysteries (originally published in 1959,1960) are in decent shape.  There is a whole series and it looks like there are still fans since they are selling boxed sets!  Both are 180 pages.  for Kim (Gage chose the 3 puzzle piece over the 1.  Very scientific)

3 The Theban Plays by Sophocles. This was a college book so there are a few notes inside, but you can just consider them helpful hints.  Includes the stories Oedipus and Antigone.  168 pages.

4 My Antonia by Willa Cather.  I just reviewed this classic here. It’s in good shape.  for Harvee

Obviously I was feeling very obscure this month.  Why not ring  in the New Year with books written a really long time ago, LOL!
