Laughing Through Life, by Connie Corcoran Wilson w/ GIVEAWAY

Laughing Through LifeFinished 12-12-11, rating 3/5, non-fiction stories, 170 pages, pub.2011

Wilson compiles stories from her life, from entertaining, to getting her ears pierced to politics.  She’s not a good cook, which accounts for a few of the more amusing stories, nor is she a good golfer, which I can easily relate to, although she is much braver than I am by putting her skills on display.  She is also unabashedly liberal, which is not a bad word in this house (I don’t consider myself a liberal, but detest it when some cable stations spit it out like it’s the worst of 4-letter words), and not shy about her anti-Bush sentiments.

The good news is that most of the stories were amusing, except the last chapter which really left the book hanging on a low note (if you are interested in hemorrhoids then this chapter is just for you).  If you read part one of her interview yesterday you know she write in a very conversational style, just like she’s sitting right there and you two are having a coffee.  The bad news is that I found the selection of stories disjointed and would have preferred a more careful consideration.  Including a random story about the 1984 Olympics seemed weird.  And the paper vs. plastic debate has pretty much been covered.

I didn’t mind the politics, the only reason I accepted the book for review is because I knew I probably agreed with her on most things, and I did, sort of.  But rehashing the 2004 election rallies seems tired at this point, unless it’s a comprehensive collection and this wasn’t.  It would have been better as a separate book, and beware she has nothing nice to say about Republicans, except that the women dress well.

Connie has graciously agreed to give away one copy to a lucky commenter.  Just let me know you’re interested and I’ll throw your name into a hat.  Open internationally (for an e-edition) or in the US for a paper or e-copy.  I’ll draw a winner on December 27.

I accepted this book for review as part of the Premier Virtual Author Book Tours

Beth Hoffman Book Signing & Giveaway

Tonight  I met Bonnie from Redlady’s Reading Room for the first time.  We only live about 20 minutes from each other and we decided to get together and meet Beth Hoffman, author of Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt.  Bonnie is a fellow Ohio State grad and we had a lot of fun chatting before we headed to the library for the book discussion and signing.  I have exchanged a few emails with Beth and knew that she was sweet.  However, I think she was even sweeter in person!  She was full of charm and warmth and if you have the chance to meet her on her book tour, take the opportunity!  (tour locales here)  She was truly inspirational.

I should note that before her discussion she talked to Bonnie and when Bonnie introduced me, Beth said, “Oh, Stacy,  Max’s Mom!”  Well, let’s be honest, I was floored that she remembered to mention him.  How cool is that?!

Okay, a couple of photos…

Beth getting ready to speak.

Bonnie, Beth, and me.

We also got to meet a few new-to-us local bloggers and writers.  Christina from Write-Brained and Lisa and Laura from Lisa and Laura Write.  Why not check them out?

Tomorrow I’ll post my interview with Beth, so come back for that.

Okay, now for your chance to win a brand new copy of Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt.  Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman: Book Cover Leave a comment with your email address and you’ll be entered to win.  You have a chance to earn extra entries by participating in my Tuesday quizzes.  Open internationally and I’ll draw a winner on February 1st.

Tracy Chevalier Book Signing and Giveaway

Tonight my friend Jean and I met for dinner at Joseph-Beth Bookstore and stayed for the book reading by bestselling author Tracy Chevalier.  I just recently read Girl with a Pearl Earring and loved it, so I was excited to hear her speak. Her first question to the 30-40 of us who were there was ‘who likes Jane Austen’?  Well, with a start like that you knew it was going to be good.  She chose 3 different passages from her new book, Remarkable Creatures (just realeased January 5th), and spent half an hour reading to us.  She was wonderful.

Then she opened it up to questions.  Here are a few things I learned…

*It took her 2 1/2 years from beginning research to completion to finish Remarkable Creatures.  As part of her research she looked for fossils and brought a few that she had found to the signing.

*Margaret Atwood is the living writer that she respects the most.

*She went to an Ohio college, Oberlin.  One of her professors was sitting in the front row.

*She chose to not be directly involved with the making of the movie, Girl with a Pearl Earring.  She thinks a movie should respect the book, but not be a slave to it or the movie will fall flat.  She was able to visit the set and loved it.

*Her next book is set in Ohio.  Woo Hoo for the Buckeye State!

It was a wonderful way to spend a Thursday evening with a friend.  So, when it was my turn to have my book signed I had her sign two.

So, is this your book she’s signing?  Could be.  Leave a comment with your email address and you’ll be entered to win this autographed hardcover copy of Remarkable Creatures.  You have a chance to earn extra entries by participating in my Tuesday quizzes.  Open internationally and I’ll draw a winner on February 1st.

Help Me Help Myself and Win a Gift Card Quiz

UPDATE – Voting Closed.  Click here to see results.

I’m going to be signing up for the Read Your Own Books challenge again next year.  Last year I committed to 50 and finished the challenge in October.  This year I have even more books in my house so I’m going to make my goal 55.  That’s where you come in.  I’ve taken a new picture of my tbr pile.  Some of these I’ve had more than 10 years, some were gifts, some I bought, a few I won from you, some were free from when I worked for Barnes & Noble, but all of them are waiting to be read.  So, here’s where you come in.  I’m letting you pick 50 of the books I will read from my stacks next year and you’ll be entered to win a $20 B&N Gift Card.

Here’s how it works – Look at my tbr stacks, choose 1-5 titles you think I need to read in 2010, leave a comment telling me which one(s) and for each title you will receive one entry for the $20 B&N Gift Card.  You don’t have to tell me why I should read it unless you want to, but in the event of a tie I will use the comments to help me decide.  I’ll leave the voting open for two weeks (until December 29).  Limit 5 titles per person.  If I’ve never sent you anything in the mail, please leave your email.

Feel free to make fun of any of the titles – I am clueless how some of them made it into this house!

I think you can click on the picture to see it better.  Here are some of the piles closer up so they are easier to read.  If you double-click on these they will be easier to read.

Favorite Book Giveaway

Click to viewI love lists.  Last year I decided to waste many hours compiling a 100 Favorite Books list.  This is certainly not a perfect list.  I rarely re-read books, so I relied on my memory.  Some are on the list because of the way they made me feel, some for the way they made me think, some for pure fun, and some for the way they shaped my childhood.  The list will forever be changing, but that’s part of the fun, right?

So, for my 11th and last birthday giveaway I will be choosing one winner on October 31st.  And what that winner wins is up to them.  The winner will choose any one book from my 100 Favorite Books list!!!  I’m pretty sure that everyone can find at least one book on that list that they want.  A few clarifications…I will choose the BRAND NEW edition you win and if there is a series of books listed you still only win one book, but which one is up to you.

To enter-

*Leave a comment with your email address on this post.

**If you would like an extra entry you can Tweet about it or add it on your blog.

***I will have 3 Monday quizzes before I pick a winner (QUIZ 1 – QUIZ 2).  For every question that you answer correctly first, you will earn one extra entry (so for 10 questions there are 10 extra entries up for grabs).

Open internationally.

I think that’s it.  Easy and fun.  I’m so glad to get to share one of my favorite books with you.  So, leave a comment and hope for a win 🙂
