Monday Movie Meme – Facial Hair

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week’s movie topic is all about Facial Hair…

Boston is an Original Six hockey town. And right now the Bruins are caught up in a thrilling series with those hated Montreal Canadiens. The B’s have mounted a determined comeback against the Habs including a double OT win over the weekend to take a series lead. Playoff hockey leads its players to grow playoff beards for good luck. Some of them, such as Bruins goalie Tim Thomas, choose instead to rock a porno stache. In the past, Andy has tried growing facial hair of his own in support of his team. Not my favorite idea. But I do have some favorite movie characters who
rocked their facial hair. Here are a few we are particularly fond of. Share on your blog characters in film with memorable beards and or mustaches, linking back here so that others can find you.

Visit The Bumbles for more.

Gage thinks his grandpa’s mustache is funny, so I’m listing the first five ‘staches that came to mind. What about you?  What’s the first mustache that you think of?

Monday Movie Meme – Running

Feature Presentation..MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about Running…Monday marks the 115th running of the Boston Marathon – the oldest annually contested marathon in the world. Having studied, lived and worked along its storied route for half my life, it holds a special place in my heart. I fulfilled my lifetime quota for running during 4 years of track in high school. Andy, as a former cross country athlete, has run in the challenging Falmouth Road Race on Cape Cod. But neither of us have or ever plan to run a marathon. Driving the route is tiring enough. We do know folks crazy enough to be running in Boston this year and wish them nothing but the best. Lots of movies feature runners, running scenes and foot races. Here is a small sampling of those off the top of our heads. Share on your blog those movies that make your feet tired just watching and link back here so that others can find you.
Visit The Bumbles to participate.
1. The first one that comes to mind is an old favorite of mine, Running Brave (1983)Go to fullsize imageBased on the true story of Billy Mills, an American Indian who overcame prejudice and circumstance to become a gold medal Olympian.  Truly inspiring.

Monday Movie Meme – Women & Prison

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week’s movie topic is all about Women & Prison…We’ve covered prison movies, heists and jail breaks before, but we’ve never focused on the fairer sex and their portrayal in the prison system. Nicole wants to focus on women who are held captive or imprisoned during a film. I would broaden that scope to include women who hold roles as guards and captors.  Share on your blog movies that feature female prisoners, guards, or those who are accused and on their way to the Big House.

The first movie that came to mind wasn’t one with a woman in prison, but she was in chains.  In Black Snake Moan (2006) Christina Ricci spends most of the movie bound in chains dressed in not much more than her undies.  Samuel L Jackson is the well intended captor.

Silence of the Lambs (1991) provides another visual of a captive woman, this one in a pit kept there by a crazy man (otherwise known as Detective Stottelemeyer).

Chicago (2002) is a movie with women in real prison.  What drove them all to lives of crime?  See for yourself.

And somehow Renee Zellweger ends up in prison again in Bridget Jones:The Edge of Reason (2004).   Only this time she’s in Thailand.

That’s all I’ve got.  What about you?

Monday Movie Meme – Movie Madness

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week’s movie topic is all about Insanity…In the movies, madness can be entertaining to watch too. Sometimes scary, sometimes sad and sometimes madcap fun. Share on your blog movies that feature maniacs, lunatics, psychos, crazed behavior or mentally tortured souls.  The Bumbles

This should be fun since so many come to mind.
1. Psycho (1960)Obviously the title makes this an obvious choice, but I love this movie!

2. American Psycho (2000)Hard to watch, but an excellent movie and performance.

3. Se7en (1995)Totally creepy and awesome movie.

4. The Soloist (2009)Just when it looked like I thought all madness makes people kill, I add this touching film that I think everyone should watch.  Based on a true story with excellent performances.

5. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948)How will greed and desperation change a person?  It may drive you insane.

Visit The Bumbles for more selections and leave a comment telling us your favorite madness movie.

Monday Movie Meme- Books

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week’s movie topic is all about Books In The Movies… today’s movie topic is all about books in the movies. Not movies made from books, but movies that feature books, reading, librarians, bookstores and the like.

There are so many choices!  Fun week 🙂

1. The Breakfast Club (1985) A whole Saturday locked in a library?  Sign me up!

2. You’ve Got Mail (1998) A cute romance featuring the big bad bookstore taking out the small independent bookstore.

3. The Book of Eli (2010) This post apocalyptic world is a dangerous place and the power is found in The Book.

4. The Proposal (2009) This hate/love relationship between a publishing editor and her writer/assistant is a bestseller.

5. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) This classic has a few great New York Public Library scenes.  I love the one where Paul Baby signs his own book in front of the disbelieving librarian!

Do you have a favorite?  Visit The Bumbles for more choices.

Monday Movie Meme- Weight

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about Weight…Share on your blog movies featuring those who want to lose or need to gain extra pounds.  Check out The Bumbles  for more lists.

The first one that comes to mind is Shallow Hal (2001) and it’s one of the few Jack Black movies that I enjoyed all the way through (usually I’ve had enough about halfway into the movie, similar to how I feel about Will Farrell).  After being hypnotized by Anthony Robbins (LOL) he sees only the inner beauty of women and falls in love with an overweight Gwyneth Paltrow.  Surprisingly, a decent movie.

The second is What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993).  This family drama is driven by the matriarch being an obese woman who is afraid to leave the house.  How this affects her four children is where this movie finds its center.

Number three is memorable only because of the false premise that the main character is fat.  Yes, I’m talking about Bridget Jones (2001).  If she hadn’t spent the whole movie harping about her weight I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.  Maybe you have to be English to think she’s fat?

And that leads us to my fourth pick, Wall-E (2008), a movie that shows us a glimpse into the future of Americans if we continue to eat and spend our way to happiness.

My last choice is Invention of Lying (2009).  In this one Jennifer Garner can’t seriously consider Ricky Gervais as a love interest because he is genetically undesirable.  She mentioned this so many times that I wanted to reach through the screen and shake her.

Am I missing a good one?

Monday Movie Meme – Money

[Dancing+Concessions.jpg]

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week’s movie topic is all about Money…Share on your blog movies that focus on making money, finding money, losing money, stealing money or spending money.

Saving Money Outsourced (2006)  A manager is sent to India because his company has outsourced jobs there to save money.  He’s in for culture shock, disappointment and love.

Inheriting MoneyBrewster’s Millions (1985) A has-been baseball player must spend $30 million in 30 days without telling anyone to inherit $300 million.

Finding MoneyA Simple Plan (1998) Two brothers and a girlfriend have found $4 million in a downed plane and decide to keep it.  Good luck with that!

Earning Money Pretty Woman (1990)  The world’s oldest profession gets star treatment in this movie that needs no description.

Having No MoneyThe Grapes of Wrath (1940) How did people survive during the Depression?  A stark look at the realities of life.

What about you?  Do you have a favorite movie about money?  Visit the Bumbles to participate or read what movies others have chosen.

Monday Movie Meme – Illness

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
This week’s movie topic is all about Illness…Share on your blog movies that contain a form of illness as its theme or feature a character who is sick or diseased, linking back here at The Bumbles.

I generally steer clear of movies that will make me cry, but here are a few that snuck up on me.

1. Terms of Endearment (1983)  Cried like a baby when I saw this.  Of course I was a baby at 12, but still.  The cast was excellent and the story, well, it’s the first movie that came to mind when I saw the topic, so it’s stayed with me all these years!

2. Moulin Rouge (2001)  If you like Broadway musicals, like I do,  then you’ll like this one about a terminally ill star in turn of the century Paris.  Loved pretty much everything about this one.

3. The Apartment (1960)  This is a favorite of mine.  Shirley MacLaine’s character overdoses on sleeping pills and must stay in Jack Lemmon’s character’s apartment.  Funny and sad or sad and funny.  Either way it worked for me.

4. Erin Brockovich (2000)  Sort of a sad yet feel good movie about terminal illness.  There is someone to blame and they must pay!  If only all illness was so easy.

5. While You Were Sleeping (1995)  I know I list this one a lot, but it does fit this category perfectly since there would be no story unless a main character is in a coma.  And it’s an illness movie with no sad parts, not an easy feat!

So, do you have a favorite movie about an illness?  (Seems like a strange question, right?)

Monday Movie Meme – Building

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME
As in life, movie characters are often building something new.  Visit The Bumbles to read more entries or to join in the meme yourself.

1. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) A classic that is a must see.  They built it and they destroyed it, but why?  You’ll have to watch to find out.

2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)  What is Andy building?  And where did he get that tool in prison?

3. Bringing Up Baby (1938)  Classic Hepburn and Grant.

4. Dinner for Schmucks (2010)  The movie was so-so but Barry’s hobby of using dead mice for making iconic scenes was funny.

5. Take a few minutes and enjoy this scene from Modern Times (1936).  Charlie Chaplin is testing an eating machine.

Monday Movie Meme – Transformations

Feature Presentation…MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week’s movie topic is all about Transformed Characters…
The movies are always giving us characters who undergo some sort of change during the story’s arc. These changes aren’t always for the better – that’s what makes them so compelling.  Visit the The Bumbles for more choices.

I’m focusing on the positive transformations today, it’s a new year why not?

1. Vivian from Pretty Woman (1990) is the first that comes to mind.  It wasn’t love that transformed her from a hooker to future college student, it was that someone believed in her.  Edward gave her confidence in herself and in the end he also gave her the fairy tale she dreamed of..

2. Charlie Babbit from Rain Man (1988) transformed from selfish ass to caring brother after the death of his father.  A cross country trip with  his autistic brother teaches him that money isn’t everything, something too many never seem to learn.

3.  I was never a high-powered career woman, but as a new mom I can appreciate Baby Boom (1987) even more. When faced with an impossible choice J.C. doesn’t shirk from responsibility, she meets it head on with attitude.

4. I think the fellowship of nine from the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001, 2002, 2003) were all transformed in some way by the epic journey and battle against evil, especially Frodo.

5. And I leave you with this unforgettable transformation by Sandy in Grease (1978).  I have to think she was responsible for more than one teen girl falling prey to an eating disorder.
